Does everyone experience pain in the same way? Why does icy hot work to soothe muscles?
These kind of questions will be addressed in a self-exploratory session led by Matt Harbowy, scientist, hacker, and philosopher. You will learn about your sense of touch, and investigate the variety of ways that our sense of touch hacks taste and hearing. You will quantify your nerves. You will learn the science behind various painkillers and placebos. You will fool yourself into experiencing false sensations. But most of all, you will discover new ways of making contact with the world of science.
You are encouraged to bring a smartphone or tablet computer to the presentation so that you can collect data in our online lab notebook and share your results with the whole class- and will be provided online tools to continue the discovery at home. Technology is not needed to enjoy the class- bring your curiosity. Special accommodations, if desired, will be made for the hearing impaired if requested in advance.
This class is planned for July 13th, 2013 and is part 5 of a 6 part lecture and lab on the senses.
