If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?
In the conclusion to the lecture and lab series on the science of the senses, the question of reality will be addressed in a self-exploratory session led by Matt Harbowy, scientist, hacker, and advocatus diaboli. The question of "what is real?" will be investigated, and the viewpoints of the philosophers of science will be discussed. You will learn how to spot when a scientist is lying to you. The truths and lies discussed in the prior five sessions will be reviewed, and participants in prior sessions will be invited to conduct encore sessions of their favorite experiments. The process of peer review will be discussed, and you will learn how to peer review the work of other scientists. Most of all, we will have fun exploring our sixth sense.
You are encouraged to bring a smartphone or tablet computer to the presentation so that you can collect data in our online lab notebook and share your results with the whole class- and will be provided online tools to continue the discovery at home. Technology is not needed to enjoy the class- bring your curiosity.
This class is planned for June 21st, 2013 and is part 6 of a 6 part lecture and lab on the senses.
