Hacking Genetic Data III:

We now know how data is obtained, what a SNP is, and where we can get original data required for a reference population.

This final discussion will talk about what we need to know to take a set of SNP data and determine your ancestry.  We will discuss such things as:

1. Basic and/or relevant population genetics and/or phylogenetics2. Genetic distance matrices3. Ways in which 23 & Me constructs ancestry data4. Potential methods & software freely available for doing an analysis

Please bring a computer to follow along as we search through what is freely available online.  At the end of this discussion, as a group we should be able to figure out where we can obtain data to set up an analysis, and what type of software we have available. If time permits and I can get a sample data set together beforehand we will run a basic analysis.

Hope to see more of these.

Hey Anthony, did you sign up for the google groups? This is the group: [masked]. Jenny, Kate, & I wanted to talk more about replicating the data results for the paper we discussed. You know--doing the PCA. Through that process we could begin critiquing the analysis like we discussed in the meeting--like what you were interested in. We met today to talk about this and would love to proceed. If you want to help, could you subscribe to the group and we can figure out the next step?

I encourage anyone who has 23&Me data to bring it. We definitely will be able to do our own ancestry analysis through FrogKB: http://frog.med.yale.edu/FrogKB/ It would be fun to be able to compare what results 23&Me sends to the analysis we will do.
