Cells can produce a variety of molecules from phar maceuticals to cosmetics. They can also be used as lab-grown meat! Large v olumes of cells are needed for production of desired biologicals\, which c an be achieved through scale-up of cell cultures and growth of cells in bi oreactors.\n\nIn this workshop\, participants will learn how to set up a b ioreactor culture. We will cover hands-on techniques from all stages of sc ale-up from thawing a cell sample to growing cells in flasks in incubators to inoculating a bioreactor and determining the appropriate bioreactor se ttings. We will practice setting up gas spargers\, agitation rotors\, a pH sensor probe\, and a feeding pump. Participants will learn how to use a s erological pipette\, an autoclave\, a micropipette\, an incubator\, and a bioreactor control panel.\n\n***The workshop fee is $100. [In compliance with scientific regulations: vertebr ates cannot be studied without IACUC approval. Corals will be sourced from authorized breeding programs. Collecting animals from the wild is strictl y prohibited.]\n\nSo far we removed calcium deposits from the tanks with v inegar and the tanks are now much more aesthetically pleasing! And we popu lated one tank with sand and saltwater. And added a couple of rocks and co rals including anemone! We now have an automatic top off system that refil ls water as it evaporates in order to stablize salinity.
