In the second half of 2013, the crafty nonprofit/thrift store SCRAP DC moved to its current Brookland location, and a few months later, began hosting this Meetup. They wanted to provide a place where you, our members, could assemble, chat, and maybe trade some tips while working on artistic works-in-progress. It sure didn't hurt to have an eclectic assortment of art supplies right outside the workroom, where you could make some quick purchases before a session if needed. However, as "scrap" took over several tenants' studios and then the storage closet, that back room became THE place for volunteers to do their work of sorting and pricing new donations.
Enter our hostess -- now Meetup co-organizer -- Marcelle! After pipes burst and flooded our usual venue, she rescued our March session with just one day's notice, and... wow -- kept finding room for the many who showed up last Tuesday night! We look forward to more of the same, with some potential alternate nights offered, perhaps with a little more frequency during these warmer months. We absolutely hope that you'll still visit SCRAP for art and office supplies when they're open (Wed.-Sun. noon-6). Now that we know our move won't be so temporary, tho', we'll change the default venue to Marcelle's studio, #15 on the Arts Walk (between 7th and 8th along Monroe Street NE). We hereby rename the group, too. You're all now members of "Get Craftin' in DC."
If you like making things by hand, please join us! All skills and skill levels welcome: whether you knit, sew, crochet, origami, scrapbook, embroider, quilt, mend clothes, make jewelry or anything else, I hope you will find a new home in this group.
