Torborg suggested we make these adorable upside down terrariums (thank you, Torborg!); she found a tutorial for them and they look amazing (see the event photo). A terrarium is basically a mini-ecosystem, which is supposed to be able to sustain itself with little to no watering once it's been set up.

Check it out here:

I love how these particular ones are made from upside down jars...ingenious!

What you'll need:

  • Clean glass jar(s) - think empty jam jars, mustard jars, tomato sauce jars...etc
  • Moss + a bit of dirt (check florists, garden stores, or even sidewalks, rock walls, or other shady areas around the city)

  • any added decorations you'd like to dress up your ecosystem: small plants, flowers, clover, knick knacks (tiny garden gnomes or flamingos, anyone??), etc

I've wanted to make terrariums for a while, and was so pleased to find they're pretty easy to do and so much fun to design + plant! Was great seeing everyone's creative takes on this and the variety of layouts + jars that we had at the end!

Was so much fun making them, dirty but fun. They turned out pretty awesome. I'm such a huge hit at the office. Hopefully they stay alive.

So much fun! My little terrariums are happily breathing today, even the weed I thought was beyond salvage last night. <3

Torborg - I'm in for some soil if you have any to spare!

I think I'm going to go hunting for moss this weekend (both in stores and outdoors); has anyone gotten theirs yet? Anyone know of a store that sells moss?

This looks awesome and I'm so glad we're doing it! I have a half bag of miracle grow potting soil- if people need dirt let me know and I'll bring you some and you can toss me a few bucks. Can't wait!

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
