****READ ENTIRE HIKE DESCRIPTION BEFORE SIGNING UP****
This has become my most favorite hike and I hope you all will enjoy it as much as I do. This hike offers everything--beautiful outlooks of the Susquehanna River, a variety of terrain and scenery, and a killer workout! We will start in the Kelly's Run area which follows a creek with waterfalls, unusual rock formations, and caves. There are several swimming holes as well. We will arrive at the Holtwood Pinnacle after the first 2.5 miles and continue to traverse through the Tucquan Creek area. For the majority of the hike, we will follow the Conestoga trail through the woods, working our way up to the House Rock Overlook, where we will eat our lunch. This is a there and back hike. After lunch, we will walk back to our cars retracing the same path. We may decide to take an alternate route back instead of going through the Kelly's Run section again. This alternate is on the road but it is rather scenic and passes many farms, fields, and homes in Amish country.
Distance/Time: 13 to 13.5 miles (about a 9 hour hike)
Difficulty: WITHOUT A DOUBT, STRENUOUS!!! 4,500 ft. total elevation gain
ONLY FOR EXTREMELY ADVANCED HIKERS!!!!!
MOST DIFFICULT HIKE I HAVE EVER DONE WITH A MEETUP
This one was designed for all you hardcore hikers out there! When I do this hike, I burn 1600 calories (130 lb. female). This hike has a large amount of Very Steep Climbs. There are also multiple creek crossings and places where we will have to rock hop. EXPERIENCED HIKERS ONLY! I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH! Please do not sign up for this hike unless you feel you can complete it and have done hikes of similar difficulty. I will not be escorting anyone back to their car and there are no points where you can drop out. If you cannot complete the hike, the only way to get you out of there is to call 911 and you will be stuck with the bill. Each hiker is responsible for his/her own safety at all times. You hike at your own risk.
Attire: I highly recommend that you bring an extra pair of socks and wear waterproof footwear that is slip resistant. Many of the rocks we will be hiking on in the creek areas are covered with moss and extremely slippery. Use caution in these areas and watch your footing. If the forecast is calling for any rain on this day, the hike will most likely be cancelled. If the rocks along Kelly's Run are wet, it becomes way too dangerous.
****As always, be sure to bring plenty of water--Minimum of 2 liters--and plenty of food. I guarantee you will need the energy for this one. :)
