Leukemia and Lymphoma Society- Light the Night Walk

I've decided to put my hiking legs towards a good cause this year and see if anyone would want to join me.

Each year, in communities all across the United States and Canada teams of families, friends, co-workers and local and national corporations come together to raise funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS's) Light The Night Walk events and bring help and hope to people battling blood cancers.

I've created a Philadelphia team by the name of "Hitchen's Hikers FBB" in honor of Christopher Hitchens who died from complications from esophageal cancer last year. This a walk in conjunction with Foundation Beyond Belief, who is shooting for a goal of $1,000,000 and have a donor who will match us dollar for dollar up to $500,000. The Stifel Foundation will double the dollars we raise until we hit our million dollar goal.

Funds raised by teams and individual walkers provide:

  • Lifesaving blood cancer research
  • Free educational materials and events for patients and their families
  • Local programs such as Family Support Groups and First Connection, a peer-to-peer counseling program
  • Comprehensive, personalized assistance through our Information Resource Center

    We have about 50 people between 4 meetups, so it might be hard to meet everyone, but the bottom steps is where we will meet. I'll be there by 4:00pm wearing my Hitchens' Hikers team shirt.

    OK, I'm sure everyone saw the email but.... we are selling team t-shirts for the walk. The cost is $50.00 for the shirt. What T-shirt costs that much? Well, it's not the cost of the T-shirt, it's the gift you are giving Lymphoma and Leukemia Society to save lives AND you get a T-shirt.

    So the thing is there's a deadline. It's this weekend. If you were thinking of donating but haven't gotten around to it yet? Thinking of buying a shirt for the day of the walk? Order goes in on Tuesday.

    You should join on the Light the Night webiste as a team member and that would make it easy to promote amongst friends, family, coworkers, ect... to help raise funds. :)

    We'll be having a meeting at Barnes and Noble, 1805 Walnut St at 7:30 on Sept 19th to discus our fundraising efforts and how we are doing if you can make it.

If you are joining the team you will need to do that within the next couple of days to track your donations that you are collecting and promote the event to the people you know.     I don't think it matters what hike it is, because we don't charge regularly, people will be happy to pay for your efforts of leading a group and if it's going to charity instead of your pocket I don't think people will have a problem with that. People are always trying to give me money after a hike. You could just post a voluntary donation of $3-5

    We are not making any progress in the fundraising area. I appreciate everyone who signed up to walk, but the real reason for this event is to raise funds for cancer research. If you would like to brainstorm ideas about raising funds, please join us on Wed Aug 29th at Barnes and Noble to discus how to turn this ship around! It's posted on the calender... :)

    The page says Eakens Oval, which is the oval shaped street with the parking lsot in the center directly in front of the Art Museum. We'll plan on meeting there around 4:15. Everybody should remember to collect donations and post to your facebook pages! We are only up to $225 after a few months...
