Appalachian Trail Backpack Trip

I need to fill in one last section in PA, from Swatara Gap to Rte. 225. This will be a late Fall trip (Winter doesn't officially start until Dec 21!) so this is a good opportunity to ease into cold weather camping. If there's snow that's a bonus! as you can work on snow-camping skills and cramponing. This will come in handy for a Cascades climbing trip I'm thinking of doing next summer: Mt. Hood, Adams, St. Helens, and maybe Rainier Base Camp (Camp Muir).

Meet at the Conshohocken park and ride at 7:00 am Sat Dec 8 for carpooling to the trailhead.

Hi, at this point it looks like I'll still be able to do the one-nighter (I need to see if I can get my tent ready) ...would like to carpool and was wondering how many of us will be meeting at Conshohocken park and ride on Saturday. Thanks

By the way. Is it still hunting season? I had to get an orange hat for last weekend and walk on bloody trails. Just a heads up, it's something to consider in planning.

Yessir, i just did 10 miles with an overnight at the pinnacle / water furnace shelter last weekend. Should I bring any extra supplies for anyone other than myself for this particular trip?

Stove check, I have tablets but no filter. Gavarish Pa Ruski? Dasvidaniya!

George, having that shelter... Does it mean that we could not bring our tents or do you think we should still bring them along?

    December 3, 2012

    • Cecilia

I'm definitely bringing my tent regardless.

George, from what I read, http://www.cnyhiking.com/ATinPA-PA183.htm, if this the section that "reaches the Blue Mt. Campsite at 8.7 mi. A blue-blazed trail to the right (southeast) leads 0.1 mi. to the William Penn through-hiker shelter, built in 1993. It’s one of the A.T.’s “Hiker Hiltons,” with a second-story loft sleeping area and windows" I assume it's hike in one way, relax at the shelter, and return back out the same way on Sunday?

  • Mary

I just did this stretch as a day hike on Sunday, so I doubt I'll sign up for this backpack, but it's a nice stretch of trail. There is a really nice A.T. shelter along the way.

Can you give a little more info about the trip, such as miles, elevation, etc? Thanks

New Meetup member, would love to do a late fall backpack, but have been off the trail for quite a while. What's the total mileage and terrain like? Are crampons actually needed?

Great! snow to cover all those rocks! I'm in!
