Creative in Colchester @15 Queen Street

This month's theme is architecture.

We have invited HAT Projects & Studio Can Can to be our speakers for this evening.

HAT Projects (Hana Loftus and Tom Grieve) are a local architectural firm that work on buildings and the built environment. They design, build, advise and self-initiate projects and research.

Hana and Tom are the architects for the £4m new gallery for the Jerwood Foundation on the seafront in Hastings. The gallery will house Jerwood's collection of modern British art, with space for temporary exhibitions as part of the Jerwood Visual Arts programme. On the night they will be showing some never before seen pictures of this new development. Read more on the project here.

Our second speaker - Emily Turnbull (Studio Can Can) has worked in the design and architecture industry since 1999 on award-winning interior projects across the UK and internationally. From large hotels to house renovations, perfume boutiques, Fred Perry shops to organic food stores. Emily has designed a medieval abbey conversion, a treetop restaurant in Saudi Arabia, and created Oysterbed Cottage on Mersea Island (a self-catering paradise for oyster lovers).

Emily has also contributed to Blueprint magazine and collaborated with Turner Prize Winner, Keith Tyson. She also lectures at design colleges across Britain.

Our resident DJ Cantcutcarwyn will be playing soul & funk throughout the night.

And if that isn't enough we also have a special performance from Slowlife (Dan Bowen). A multi-instrumentalist indie/folk act from Colchester.

Another excellent night! Really enjoyed welcoming the members and lovely new faces to the building. The talks were really inspirational, thought provoking and very relevant. Plus I loved Slowlife's performance. Couldn't be better.

First time at one of these events, thoroughly enjoyed it, there was no hostility and it was great to meet so many creative people and see a place where they could all bounce their creativeness off each other As a prospective architecture student, I felt the talks really insightful about the profession and the wide range of projects one can be involved in.

This was my first Creative in Colchester meetup and I can honestly say, this won't be my last! The subject matter was what initially dragged me in, but the overall experience I encountered - from the friendly welcome from Alex, the informative speakers and then to the mingling after, has not deterred me from returning to discover more.

I had a brilliant time. It was great to talk to all sorts of people and the talks were very inspiring as usual.

Both speaker sessions were excellent – interesting, inspiring and well presented. And, great to have music afterwards too. As ever, Alex and Marc brought Queen Street residents and guests a memorable evening. Talking with some non-resident guests who had come to hear the speakers and meet everyone, it was clear that they thought the evening and what Queen St is doing was very impressive indeed. Best, JD
