TRIP CANCELLED DUE TO WEATHER! Wichita Mountains Preserve -Oklahoma

The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge and Nature Preserve is located 25 miles northwest of Lawton, Oklahoma.  Area C at Doris Campground is reserved for us, and it has clean water, showers and toilets.  I have paid in advance for two nights in case people want to come up Friday PM, which I plan to do.  The total cost of Area  was $28/night for the entire group, so we can split it per person.  It can handle up to 30 people and has a covered pavilion.  If you require electricity, area A & E at Doris Campground has electricity for $20.00 a night.  I understand that you can keep any rocks or crystals you find here.  The geologist that may also attend, Doug Schwartenberger, has collected rock specimens here several times. We will be hiking and looking in key areas, not digging or hammering away at rock formations.  The scenery and wildlife are supposed to be awesome, so start planning ahead and please come if you RSVP, so I can plan for the right number.

See more at the Wichita Preserve website with maps, links below: http://www.fws.gov/refuge/wichita_mountains/

The map of the Doris campground on Quanah Parker Lake is at: http://www.fws.gov/uploadedFiles/map-camp-doris.pdf

The map showing the lake is: https://maps.google.com/maps?q=map+lake+quanah+parker+ok&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=0x87ace538a9a7d7bd:0x2bdebcac515d7312,Quanah+Parker+Lake&gl=us&ei=AWQ3UpPAJuqe2QXv0oHICA&ved=0CDkQ8gEwAA

Drive west from Lawton OK on Hwy 62 to Cache, then north on Hwy 115 to the Wichita Preserve headquaters, then west on Road 49 just a short distance to Quanah Parker Lake and Doris Campground, Area C. http://www.nationsonline.org/oneworld/map/google_map_Oklahoma_City.htm

I am working at getting over a cold, so I need to take a hiatus on the cold weather this pass. But I hope we can plan this one again sometime soon as I still very much want to go.

    I love that space.
Great hiking and very spiritual space.
Exposed and decomposing granite dome that is very old.

I have a minivan, can carry several people and their gear for camping. Lets use less gas, make less CO2, do some ride share, and have more fun on the way up and back.

I am leaving from Plano, have ample secure parking here for anyone that is wanting to ride-share, or can pic someone up if they are in Allen or McKinney or marginally on the way going north, or near Plano. Dale, I'll let you round up anyone that is more on the west side. I am really psyched for this and the new van has raring to go camping for a whole week now.

There is a cold snap going right now, but forecast for the 2 weeks is on the dry side of normal climatology (mean temps & Precip) for late November. In other words, no wet, just bring your cool weather gear.

Notice that the camping area reserved is "C" (not B) at Doris Campground. If you want a motel or cabin please search the internet at Lawton, Cache and Medicine Park. Post a message if you want to share a room or a ride, etc. Link to motels: http://oklahoma.hometownlocator.com/nearby/hotels,n,wichita%20mountains%20national%20wildlife%20refuge%20headquarters,lat,34.7326,lon,-98.7137,radius,50.cfm

The park just re-opened today Oct. 17, and the soonest weekend I could reserve camping area B or C for the group was Nov 22-24. The weather will be cool but probably just right for camping. hiking and and having a camp fire while we spot "elementals". There are motels nearby in Cache and Lawton. Hiking is a lot better when it is cool but remember to bring 3 water bottles and a backpack too. -If you need a ride or can offer a ride, please post it. If you have extra tent space or want to split a motel room, please post it. Are you ready to have fun finding crystals?! RSVP when you know for sure you can make it.
