Find Crystals at the Wichita Mountains Preserve -Oklahoma

The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge and Nature Preserve is located 25 miles northwest of Lawton, Oklahoma.  Area B at Doris Campground is reserved for us, and it has clean water, showers and toilets.  I have paid in advance for two nights in case people want to come up Friday PM, the 28th, which I plan to do.  I understand that you can keep any rocks or crystals you find here.  A geologist, Doug Schwarztenberger, plans to attend and guide us.  He has collected rock specimens here several times. We will be hiking to key areas, not digging or hammering away at rock formations.  The scenery and wildlife are supposed to be awesome, so start planning ahead and please come if you RSVP, so I can plan for the right number.  -The total cost of Area  was $28/night for the entire group, so we can split it per person.  It can handle up to 30 people and has a covered pavilion.  If you require electricity, area A & E at Doris Campground has electricity for $20.00 a night/site.  You can also find nearby motels and cabins.  *Bring good shoes, a backpack and at least 2 water containers for hiking.  Bring your food and drinks.  I have a camp stove.

Drive west from Lawton OK on Hwy 62 to Cache, then north on Hwy 115 to the Wichita Preserve headquaters, then west on Road 49 just a short distance to Quanah Parker Lake and Doris Campground, Area B. http://www.nationsonline.org/oneworld/map/google_map_Oklahoma_City.htm

I PLAN to be at Doris Campground (area B) by Friday at 8:30 PM. We will meet at the area B pavilion on Saturday morning. We may do an early hike but most people will arrive Sat noon to 1 PM, so an afternoon hike will probably be about 2 PM, and possibly one about 5-6 PM. Sunday morning we can do another hike before packing up.

I hope to leave at dawn and get up there early Friday and take off for some trail riding on the ATB if they allow it, or a hike or two. I'll see everyone at Doris at some point. Dale, do you know if we can setup camp in Section before you get there? Does someone need to check in or anything?

We're looking forward to this trip. We're staying near by in a cabin arriving Friday afternoon... Is there a game plan in place? Meet time and place? Or work it out via cell phone/txt once we arrive? BTW: my cell[masked]

I don't expect to repeat a trip soon to this location because there are other locations we may want to try.

Will you be doing this again anytime in the near future?

Dale, does your scheduling this on March 28th mean that there will be ice everywhere in a three state area that weekend? ;)

The Pavilion in that area has 20Amp 120Volt electric, if someone wants to bring a coffee pot.

Are there any activities planned for Sunday, besides breaking camp? I'll be at a B&B up the road.

This area is very scenic, with a variety of wildlife. The weather should be just right for hiking and camping, and there are motels and cabins nearby too. There are crystals in certain areas, and a geologist plans to come that knows the area to guide us. I plan to come up Friday PM but our first hike will start about 1 PM Saturday. -Please RSVP once you KNOW you are coming.
