First Meeting of Cthulhu Rising at Café Express on Lovers Lane

Welcome to the first meeting of Cthulhu Rising: The HP Lovecraft Society of Dallas. I wanted to hold this first meeting on August 20th, Lovecraft’s birthday, but that falls on a Tuesday. Alas, the start of the week is not a good time to host our first meeting, so I've compromised and scheduled it for the following Saturday.

This is about two months after the group was launched. Since it will take some time to build up a membership base, this delay should provide ample time to get new people signed up and ready to participate.

To begin with, we will be reading Lovecraft’s first three stories:

• 1897: The Little Glass Bottle
• 1898: The Secret Cave or John Lees Adventure
• 1898: The Mystery of the Grave-Yard

You can find these stories online at www.hplovecraft.com. Have these stories read before you arrive.

These are all very, very short and won’t be much to talk about. However, I want to start small because I’d like for all of us to begin the meeting by introducing ourselves and sharing when and how we first became acquainted with the works of Lovecraft.

We will be meeting at Café Express on Lovers Lane in Dallas. There is plenty of parking out front, and I will have a sign on the table so you can find us.

I am probably going to request a $2 donation at each meeting from every person who attends. Meetup.com charges me a monthly fee to host these meetings, and since I already run another Meetup group, the fees can add up quickly.

I look forward to seeing you all there.

Hey, this is more directed at John Petty, but I'll put it up here for anyone who would be interested... This is the Cthulhu Wars boardgame (by Sandy Petersen) on Kickstarter. The main page has boatloads of information, and the updates tab shows very in depth progress on the game development. They are releasing updates every few days right now, and hope to have the game available by the end of the year!

I say it's worth a look just for the awesome miniatures, even if you aren't interested in the game.

I just realized that this might be better placed in the Discussions section...

Feel free to start any discussions you want. I know we'll have more gamers join in the future.

I could kick myself for forgetting to take a group photo for the website. If anyone is interested, I created some more of those postcard flyers for the second meeting. You can download and print them here: http://files.meetup.com/9161102/Meetup%20Invitations%20-%202nd%20Meeting.pdf

Yes, I added it to the "about us" section. I originally had that on there before, but took it off for some reason or another.

I had a great time. It was a fun and thoughtful conversation. I appreciate all the comments and conversation from tonight's meetup. As someone who has run these meetups, it is expensive so let's all contribute $2 each meetup if we can at all afford it even though our organizer says we don't have to (I think he is just a really nice guy). I don't mean to speak for the organizer, but as an active participant only. Of course, if someone cannot afford $2 donation then I bet none of us wants that to be a barrier to attendance. Thanks again to all for a fun evening.

Wonderful meetup with thoughtful and intelligent conversation on a fun topic. I will definitely attend again and encourage those who love literature and/or Lovecraft to join the group.

My apologies! Something's come up and I cannot be there. I dislike having to cancel 20 minutes beforehand. :( I do look forward to the next session, though! :)

Don't worry about it. I'm not requesting any donations. Turns out as long as I pay an organizer fee, I can organize as many groups as I want, and the cost does not increase.

I also want to remind you all to please keep your RSVP up to date, and change it if you are not going to be able to make it that night. I look forward to meeting you all then.

Everyone, I do not want to conduct these meetings like a business meeting with an agenda and stated goals. However, I think for the first meeting (and perhaps the second, too), we will have to do just that. Since we do not know one another, I want to be sure that we each get an opportunity to share our opinions and ideas. We will start with a simple introduction by me about the goals of the group. Then we will go around the table and each member can introduce themselves; then briefly discuss which story is their favorite, and why; and opine as to why HPL has had such lasting influence. We will then take a moment to discuss the reading list for the next meeting, as well as the place and time. This way we will have this out of the way should anyone need to leave early.

Next we will discuss the three stories we read for this meeting.
