Symphony Parnassus, a community orchestra--meaning the players, most trained in music conservatories, have other day jobs--holds its second program of the season at the beautiful and accoustically perfect San Francisco Conservatory of Music. This orchestra can please even those with the most discriminating taste at a third the cost.
The program:
Reicha | Overture in 5/8 (1806)
Like most Czech musicians, Reicha had a special skill in writing for wind instruments, but he was also interested in such "modern" effects as quarter-tones, bi-tonality, and complex rhythms. The Overture in D, for example, is composed entirely in 5/8 time, and its unique rhythm really sounds like Mozart with a twist. It will thrill fans of the classical period--there really was more to it than Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven.
Kreutzer | Violin Concerto No. 19 (1810)
Axel Strauss, soloist
French composer Rudolphe Kreutzer is known mostly as the beneficiary of a Beethoven Sonata, so renowned was his playing and composing. This is the last of his violin concerti
Schubert | Death and the Maiden (1824~arr. Stein)
The arranger is none other than Andy Stein of Prairie Home Companion fame among many other credits. He has taken one of Schubert's most beloved quartets and expanded it to the orchestra format "in the manner of Schubert".
