SUMMARY:Rarely Played Symphonies from the Classical Period
DESCRIPTION:CulturePlaces: Exploring Human Expression\n\nSymphony Parnassus
\, a community orchestra--meaning the players\, most trained in music conse
rvatories\, have other day jobs--holds its second program of the season at
the beautiful and accoustically perfect San Francisco Conservatory of Music
. This orchestra can please even those with the most discriminating taste
 at a third the cost.\n\nThe program: \n\nReicha | Overture in 5/8 (1806)\nL
ike most Czech musicians\, Reicha had a special skill in writing for wind i
nstruments\, but he was also interested in such "modern" effects as quarter
-tones\, bi-tonality\, and complex rhythms. The Overture in D\, for example
\, is composed entirely in 5/8 time\, and its unique rhythm really sounds l
ike Mozart with a twist. It will thrill fans of the classical period--there
really was more to it than Haydn\, Mozart and Beethoven.\nKreutzer | Violi
 n Concerto No. 19 (1810)\n Axel Strauss\, soloist \nFrench composer Ru
dolphe Kreutzer is known mostly as the beneficiary of a Beethoven Sonata\,
so renowned was his playing and composing. This is the last of his violin
concerti\nSchubert | Death and the Maiden (1824~arr. Stein) \nThe arranger
is none other than Andy Stein of Prairie Home Companion fame among many oth
er credits. He has taken one of Schubert's most beloved quartets and expan
ded it to the orchestra format "in the manner of Schubert".\n\nTherešs a pa
rking lot at the corner of Oak and Franklin\, and parking is free in the ne
ighborhood on Sundays.\n\nGeneral admission is $22 premium and $20 regular
seating. Students and Seniors pay $15. Tickets will be on sale at the door
at 1:30pm\, or in advance through City Box Office. Get your tickets online
