Into the Russian Woods

RRC: Roberts' Russian Cuisine: Get some Borscht above La Brea

Trying Something New, Going ala Carte...But... Some of the dishes take time.. So John the Manager has asked if we could give him fair warning.. Chicken Kiev takes 5-6 hours to marinate.... Hmmm Good.. So follow instructions below: 1) Please check out Menu: http://photos4.meetup... 2) Read, Review, and Choose... 3) Choose an entree and email me @ [masked] Include in email: Your Name: Chris Kaufman Your Entree: Chicken Kiev Your Phone#: [masked] Your Meetup ID URL: http://culturecircle.... 3) If you do not email me by Wenesday July 16th at 8pm... You will not get what you want... 4) If you do not email me the above information by Wens @ 8pm, I will remove you from the RSVP list This way you can all get what you want, of course... And all can enjoy... But with over 40 persons, John needs your help. This way you get to select from the entire menu, instead of a price fix of just two-three items... 5) If you do not show or can not show up Please send email to [masked] by Thurs July 17th. If you send a email, request an entree and do not show and do not cancel, you will be removed from Culture Sponges. You will be removed from the RSVP list only. 7) Please do not flake on me or Robert's Russian Cusine on this one.. :) 8) We will have the place to ourselves and it will be huge fun... Its hard to find a russian restaurant in Los Angeles. East European Markets? Sure... Sweet old russian couples doing weird soviet gymnastics in west hollywood parks definitely... But where does a Culture Sponge go to get real Tabaka (Georgian Style)? Or find the finest Chicken A-La Moscow? Or a hot bowl of classic Russian Borscht soup? LAX has non-stops to Kiev every day... But Wait! Go no further... Between Hollywood Blvd and Sunset Blvd on La Brea is the home of Robert's Russian Cuisine. Is it authentic? Well, when I walked in not one table was speaking english, and I thought I had wandered into a Politboro birthday party. Laughing and Singing... If its good enough for the real Russians it got be great for us... You want Beef Stroganoff cooked by persons who actually know who Stroganoff was? Well, Robert's has it.. and for $11.50 you get soup or salad, and choice of two sides Rice, Potatoes, or Vegetables... But wait you want Chicken A-La Moscow? Robert's got that too... Fine chicken breast sauteed in garlic and lemon same side combo as above at just $9.95! Like Lamb my little Bubushka? Sure you do and so does Robert! Order the Po Karsky! Rack of Lamb that are of course USDA Choice marinated in Roberts' special sauce and charbroiled to perfection.. Needs something sweet? Sure Baklava, and Kvas (Russian Cola) will do the trick! Or try the famous drink of the resistance Tarxun, a tarragon soda! Just 2.50 and flown in on Air Kiev freight right to Robert's door... This is ala carte so don't pay me, PAY ROBERT's Waiter... So bring your Visa, Mastercard, or American Express. There are too many selections to choose for you, so just bring your appetites and sit down... Mister Blinky my alter Ego will be there... As I munch on some Lula Kebab. And later walk down the street to The Woods. Very Cool Bar on La Brea... For my Dive Bar Meetup .. So sit down try some great Russian cuisine, and wash it down in the deep dark woods of west hollywood.... Met with John the Manager, and they are expecting us... See you all there... Lost or Late? [masked] (Culture Sponges will try to get buffet style group meals when possible and economically feasible.Roberts was not feasible with a large group)

Old Russians pull it through despite being over booked...

Everyone kept talking about going to this "Glow" thing afterwards - which eclipsed any goings on at the Woods. The place does have good drink specials, a nice atmosphere and cool penny tile in the ladies' room (that's something only architects appreciate I think :)

I really loved it. I got to meet many interesting people and Chris!
The place is definitely one of those "hold in the wall" places you love and go to. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to make it to "The Woods" but it was still a great experience.

I really liked this place. You know it's authentic when you see Russian families dining beside our group. Everyone seemed to like their respective choices and the price was a bargain. I would come back to this place and would recommend it to friends. My thanks to Chris for hosting this fun event!

Small indoor space. An amazing former ussr watching place--the sovietskies like to sit cheek to jowl, like 12 to a table. There's usually a lot of hugely buxom babes with really big peroxided hair. Also gallon jugs of vodka on their tables. Outside, in the tiny parking lot--lots of ruskie biz takes place on cell phones.
Waiters do the cute thing of offering seltzer water or cherry seltzer to start your great fat russian experience.
