Another interesting workshop on Rhythm, Voice, afro-cuban drumming, folkloric rhythms and jazz

Subject: reminder sat/sunday drum class

An amazing drum class:

angel figueroa is accepting a round of new students at PAWS music drum school on pico blvd.    the studio is in the back of the parking lot at  5268 West Pico Blvd. LA, CA 90019. (for more info on angel)

the class spans afro-cuban drumming, folkloric rhythms and jazz.

we play the batahs for the first few hours, then move on to play folkloric styles, slowly learning all the universe of instruments in the field (bongos & congas but also, cincero, guido, cow-bell, katah, and many many more)  - the universe of afro-cuban instruments and rhythms.   finally towards the end of class we are all composing jazz and singing together, making original music.    in this last part of class, students are encouraged to bring their instruments and ideas.  there is a trumpet player, sax, violin and several pianists among our ranks so far...the music is stellar and a great opportunity to cut your chops in any way you are yearning to do.

voice is a big part of the process, as angel says, there is no drummer without a voice and a song!

classes are 20 dollars for drop in or 200 dollars a month for both classes (or one day of the two, same price - a great value either way for HOURS of instruction and playing).   i go on sundays after choir from 2-6 (or sometimes 7pm) and it's just about a perfect day.

angel is a gifted musician, world class character and patient, loving teacher.  the classes are intergenerational.   currently our students are 9-72 and all ages in-between.   there are two parents who are currently learning alongside their children - really wonderful.

angel can be reached via email (subject :  new student/friend of charlie) at <[address removed]>.

this is a special opportunity for gay people and for women who are not traditionally allowed to learn the sacred rhythms and songs of the igbodoo (the sanataria nature worship, long form ceremony).  angel is a priest in the religion and has special permission from the order to teach gay folks and women.  in this way, this is also an extra-ordinary and unique opportunity.

please feel free to email me at [address removed] with any questions you might have.  or, just be in touch with angel -- and i look forward to seeing you there!!

in love, light, and most especially music sweet music -
