Ericeira Adventure: Surf, Sun & Seafood, in a picturesque Portuguese village!

Hi guys and gals! I will be there, in my usual spot at the usual time: Ericeira 20th -22nd September. What is it all about? In a few words: Surf, Seafood, Sun, breathtaking Beaches and Seascapes (Ericeira is a World Surf Reserve!), and a whole lot of very cool surf n chill out bars all over the place! I would love to share this place with you and all the amazing things it has to offer in a weekend adventure!

So I have prepared us a rough plan of what our weekend could be like, for us to make the most out it… But first… Let me tell you about this spot!

Described as one of the coolest European villages by Fox News, Ericeira is also the first World Surf Reserve in Europe! For the quality and consistency of its waves and beaches, the biodiversity, the existence of a surf culture and a local surf industry, and the support of the local community; Ericeira gathers the perfect conditions for learning surf and has become widely internationally known for its world surf competitions. But there is a whole lot more to it than just surf…

The sea, which serves as a background and frames Ericeira’s beautiful beaches and cliffs, is the central spot for all activity within the village. Ericeira is a picturesque typical Portuguese fishing village with a rich gastronomy based on fresh fish and seafood, especially the lobster, grown in nurseries along the rocky coast. We will try all of this in one of the many village restaurants located either on the main road by the sea, or the narrow streets which remind you of the old times. Ericeira also has beautiful samples of Portuguese typical pavement and buildings covered in azulejos (a form of Portuguese painted, tin-glazed, ceramic tilework) which have become a typical aspect of Portuguese culture and are 2 of our most antique national arts. With a history deep rooted in the Phoenician times, Ericeiria was also where the Portuguese Royal Family left to exile when there the Republic was instaured.

Price: Early bird price for this trip is £250. It only applies if you pay the full amount by the end of May. If you pay the full price in in June - July, the price will increase to £270. After July it will raise to £290.

The reminder of the money has to be paid into my account 2 weeks before the trip the latest. If it is not paid by then your RSVP will be removed and your deposit will not be refunded.

The details on how to make the payment are here: http://www.meetup.com/Curious-Kat-Adventure-Club/pages/Bank_account/

The places are limited, so grab yours quickly to avoid disappointment. Paying the non refundable deposit of £50 will secure your place.

And the plan for our adventure is…

Friday 20th September

7.25am Flight departs from Luton Airport

10:10 Arrive at Lisbon Airport

10:10-11:10 Collecting luggage and going through customs

11:10-11:40 Transfer to Lisbon (included)

11:40-13:00 Transfer to Ericeira (included)

13:00-13:50 Check in the Ecological Resort (included), drop our luggage and grab our towels, swimming wear and sunscreen.

14:00 Lunch on a seafood and fish restaurant of Ericeira village. The restaurant is on a rocky cliff above the sea so we can enjoy the sunshine and the amazing sea views (and occasional wave blasts and splashes) with our meal (not included).

After Lunch:

Site seeing with a map! Yes!!! After the massive lunch we will have and all the Portuguese wine you can drink (and if there is one thing that Portugal is serious about is the quality of its wine. They are seriously good! Seriously.) I will take you on a short walk through the village and by the sea, introduce you to all the local beaches and show you some of my favourite spots. After that you should be perfectly able to locate yourself and have a little wonder around on your own or with others, if you feel like it in the afternoons of Saturday and Sunday.

18:00 Make our way to one of my favourite little spots, where we can sit just above the beach having a cocktail a beer or a coffee and wait for the golden Sunset over the Sea! Check out the photographs, you will see what I mean…

After the Sun sets on the horizon, it’s time to move on maybe grab a bite before heading for drinks.

Saturday 21st September

8.30am Meet outside the resort and go for breakfast on a local café well known for its sweet and savory pastries! We will need a sugar boost before our surf class! (not included)

9:00am – 9.20 – Walk (about 1 mile) from the village to Foz do Lizandro beach where we will meet with the surf instructors.

9:30am – 11.30 (aproximatelly) Surf lessons. (included) You don’t need to know any surf, just to keep your head above water! Our lessons will be for beginners who never tried surfing before. Zero knowledge or skill required!

After the Surf Lessons: Beach time yeeeah! In Foz do Lizandro beach we have the sea as well as the Lizandro River to bath in, plenty of sand for laying on and getting a tan. We also have many cool surf café-bars, where we will be able to have a meal immediately after training, whilst enjoying the beach views! (Caipirinhas and other cocktails for €5 in Foz do Lizandro last time I was there! Just saying…) I should be chilling out there until 4pm.

Alternatively, you may choose to make your way back to the village straight away, and explore or visit any of the other beaches near to the village. In the cool spirit of a Surf Trip time can’t ever be overly structured! Especially where and when cocktails are priced at €5… Also there are so many wonderful options of beaches, bars, restaurants and corners to explore that I feel that the time between the surf lessons and dinner should be flexible, to give all a chance to go with the flow and follow the feeling… ;) .

16.30 – 18.30 Back to the Resort and relax.

18.30 Chill out walk – come and discover another of my secret special spots on the rocky cliffs and watch the Sunset-Over-the-Sea from there.

20.00 Dinner in a local Seafood / Fish restaurant, followed by drinks in one (or many) of the local surf café-bars! (not included)

23.00 Nightclub Ourico – Optional

Sunday 22nd September

8.30am - Meet outside the resort and go for breakfast in one of the village best cafes, famous for its delicious pastries (savoury and sweet).

9:00am – 9.20 – Walk (about 1 mile) from the village to Foz do Lizandro beach where we will meet with the surf instructors.

9:30am – 11.30 (approximately) Surf lessons

After the Surf Lesson

Back to the Resort, have a shower and check out.

Go for Lunch.

16.30 Make our way to Ericeira Coach Terminal

17.00 Coach from Ericeira Terminal to Lisbon Campo Grande

18.00 Arrive at Lisbon Campo Grande and take the tube to Lisbon Airport

18.50 Check in at Lisbon Airport

20.50 Flight departs

Useful Information

For a breakfast (latte and a sandwich or pastry) you would normally pay €3.

For a cocktail on the beach you would normally pay between €3-€5.

For a beer on the beach you would normally pay €1.25.

For a fish / seafood meal with appetisers desert and a couple of glasses of wine per person you would normally pay between €20 and €30.

For other meal options like burgers / steak, chips, salad and a couple of beers you would normally pay €10.

Alternativelly I suggest the following flight:

OUTBOUND

Easyjet flight

Friday 20/09/2013

Departure: 7.25am Luton Airport

Arrival: 10.10am Lisbon Airport

RETURN

Easyjet flight

Sunday 22/09/2013

Departure: 21.15 Lisbon Airport

Arrival: 23.55 Luton Airport

Price:[masked] GBP

Try not to book an earlier return flight as that will mean you might have to travel on you own from Ericeira back to Lisbon airport.

The above prices are for hand luggage only as with easyjet you need to pay extra for check in luggage. But for a weekend in the sun you might not need more than hand luggage.

Don’t forget your swimming suit, a beach towel or sarong, sunglasses and flip flops for the beach. A warmer jumper for the evening is advisable as the village is by the sea.

I am looking forward to meet you all there! I will be waiting for you all at Lisbon airport (I will post my Portuguese mobile contact nearer the date so that you can call me upon arrival). We will have an unforgettable time!

Hi Everyone, as there is a few of travelling from Luton Airport, how about us meeting at a central point and introducing ourselves, it will be nice to get to know each other before our arrival at Lisbon.

    1 · September 17, 2013

    • Shilpa

Vidya and Hugh, thanks for your response, I have booked return to Luton as it is the nearest airport to me. I shall get there at 5.30am and will go directly to the check in desk, if you would like to meet up I will be in the queue and if you want me to I will hang around in the area until you arrive.

Hey everyone! At Lisbon airport after passing the luggage collection area you will have to go through slidding doors to get to the public area. You will have to take your left or right down the ramp. Take your left guys and me and Marco will be there waiting for you all. Bon voyage! X

i just found this group and i would have joined you but the flight tickets are a little steep! pity...next time

    September 18, 2013

    • Tânia Gil H.

Oh I'm so sorry you only found out so close to the date. The prices are £290 and we could still accommodate you. I'm unsure about the prices of flights at this stage, but if not more than £190, I would say they are not much more expensive than I usually pay to fly to Lisbon.
I'm already here, the sun is shining and the temperature is 29 centigrades! I you can try to make it, as I got a feeling this will be a wonderful adventure, specially before we all have to go through another long London winter ! Hope you make it! Let me know if you do! X tania

If not, let me know what time your flights arrive so that I can roughly calculate the time you will get to Ericeira and who I should be counting on for the Friday lunch! Hey I don't know if I had told you before or not, but the instructor said you can keep the suits and boards and pay for the rental something like £35 and they will arrange with you to come back with the van and pick up the equipment once your done with it. I can't remember the exact price if the rentals but its something around that that he mentioned.
