DVD Discussion Group: Helvetica and Word Wars

The basic premise of this meetup is the same as a book club, only with a movie instead. We select a movie on DVD in advance, and we each watch the movie separately at our convenience. Then we get together to discuss it for an hour or so on the third Monday of each month.

C'ville Coffee is a nice space; there are food and drinks available, including hot dinner-style food, and the parking is good.

In honor of July being Word Geek Documentaries Month, we'll discuss two shorter documentaries: Helvetica (2007) "about typography, graphic design, and global visual culture" (imdb), together with Word Wars (2004), "a look at the obsessive world of competitive Scrabble" (imdb).  Kristine will open the discussion, and then we will all get to express our opinions, reactions, and ideas about the film.

For more information and to see trailers go to http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0847817/ and http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0390632/

*Where Can I Find This Movie?:*
Try local video stores, e.g. Sneak Reviews; online sites such as Netflix and Blockbuster.com; the public library and the UVa library (if you are affiliated with the UVa). Both of these are available for streaming on Netflix and perhaps on other services such as Amazon, Hulu, and Google Play. Let Erica or George know if none of these will work for you.

Hope to see you there!
