Ride 3: Whitstable to Dover - 40 miles

The Ride

This is the third ride of the “Cycle 30” group from Whitstable to Dover.  The total distance is around 40 miles.

The first part of the ride is on the famous Crib and Wrinkle route: Canterbury.

The Crab and Winkle Way is a terrific 7.5 mile (12km) mainly traffic-free route, its name from the railway line that once ran between Whitstable and Canterbury. It is mostly flat, It was World’s first passenger railway line when it opened in 1830. But the steam locomotive Invicta couldn’t cope with the gradients and was soon replaced with

cables driven by a winding steam engine. But cyclists today shouldn’t experience any problems with the short climbs!”

Following on from the Crab and Wrinkle way the route goes to the coastal town of Sandwich and then follows a spectacular coastal route to Dover, where you can take a ferry and go to France if you wish. The latter part is mostly flat with only one climb at the end.

This route is 80% on road and 20 % off road. A road bike should be fine for this trip. The link below shows the main route including an elevation graph.

(Please note by default the distance markers are shown in km, if you want to see these in miles you need to create an account on mapmyride and then you can change the setting to imperial)

The site also has a link for downloading a GPX file for all the high tech riders who know what I am talking about.

The towns and villages names that you should look out for along the way are Canterbury, Sandwich and Deal and then Dover.

We will stop every 5 miles for a quick catch up, and there will be 3 longer stops of 20-30 minutes approximately after every 10 miles.

Stopping for a long lunch is not advisable as your muscles may refuse to work after such a long rest. The stops are near pubs or high street, so you can get a quick drink and a sandwich, but it is advisable to bring your lunch. The ride will end at a pub where you can get a proper meal if you wish.

The three designated pit stops will be near Canterbury, Sandwich and Deal

Hi Vineet or whoever was involved in the ride, I was just wondering what the road surfaces were like from Canterbury to Dover? We're planning to do this route soon. Thanks so much!

Hi Nicola, the route is mostly road , from memory. There was only a small bit on a gravel road. Whistable to Cantebury had a longer muddy track , but the rest wa road. All I remeber about the route was that it was very windy as you got towards the coast. Have a good ride.

A big thank you to Vineet for a well-organized ride. The scenery was amazing. The wind made for a longer ride than expected but everyone just powered on! See you all again.
