Brighton with a twist.

If you are in London during the Bank Holiday one day of cycling will be the best way to off set the excesses of the rest of the weekend.

I haven't cycled to Brighton this season yet. To be honest, the route rather bores me after so many rides following the same track bar for some subtle changes. For the sake of renewing my love affair with Brighton I mapped a route with a twist.

Start: We meet 8:15am at London Bridge, next to Evans shop. I will depart promptly at 8.30am.

Route: The twist includes a longer ride at 80 miles. We will cycle westwards and arrive in Brighton from the west, which  means no Ditchlin Deacons. The route goes via Box Hill (the village, not the actual hill); Dorking, Billinghurst and we arrive in Brighton via Shoreham-on-the sea. 80 miles; 4651ft elevation; maximum ascent of 797ft and maximum gradient of 10%. It will be a hard yet scenic ride. Hopefully, we should be rewarded by chips at the seafront in Brighton.

PACE OF THE RIDE: This will be a long ride with a few peaks to climb although it becomes rather flat towards the second half. Our usual average 15mph pace. There will be  a few  stations en route if you need to bail out (either through exhaustion or due to falling excessively behind).  Within reason we usually wait for slower riders but ultimately the group is above individuals so those who are not within the group's average pace will have to bail out. I tend to be the weakest link so if you fall behind me you will have to continue on your own. Conversely please note that this is a social event. This is not a race or a time trial. If you don't fancy riding in a group or waiting for someone that may be slightly slower or to have a chat whilst cycling or if you prefer riding solo and shooting off at your own pace please do not join us. We love cycling but we also enjoy the social aspect of it.

ATTENDANCE: Please only RSVP if your social/work calendar looks free for this Saturday.  We don't welcome last minute cancellations . We rely on group savers for cheaper fares. Review our attendance policy please: if you cancel the day before or if you don't show up you may be removed from the group.

Stops: We don't really stop often. A toilet/mechanical stop when needed, maybe a quick snack break at 25 and 50 miles and other mechanical and toilet stops as needed. We won't stop any more often.

Lunch: Lunch will be when we arrive in Brighton. Not en route. Please bring enough snacks to cover the ride (note to self, always err on the side of one too many)

What to bring: Please buy snacks in advance. Don't delay the group asking to stop to buy them. You'll also need water to refuel regularly. Weatherproof gear. Spare inner tube(s), pump, a mobile phone and some cash. A  Helmet is mandatory when you ride with us. A swimming suit is too ambitious?

HEALTH & SAFETY: Cycling is fun and safe but no sporting activity is risk-free. To minimise such risk when you take part in our rides you will be expected to ride safely, wearing a helmet and abiding by the Highway code. No red light jumping, unexpected turns or dangerous overtaking will be accepted. If we feel you are putting other group members at risk you will be asked to bail out immediately. Please note that you join us at your own risk and that by joining us on this trip you understand, accept and agree to take all the risks inherent and expected from cycling on the roads exempting myself and your fellow riders for any accident/injury you may sustain. This should be read as a clause of exemption of liability for all purposes.

Return to London: We have several trains per hour to London Victoria (via Clapham) and to London Bridge (via East Croydon).

Weather : I will happily go ahead with forecast of drizzle and scattered showers. Anything less appealing like heavy rain and gust winds will result in cancellation of the event. Apologies in advance.

One of the aims of the Cycling group is to appreciate of our natural surroundings, local towns and villages. We hope to minimise our impact by making sure that we are responsible for our litter. Please dispose of all of your litter and snack wrappers carefully".

Great ride, intense, but thoroughly enjoyable and very scenic. Even the weather improved along the way and we could actually enjoy some sunshine in Brighton :)

Very very pretty route, particularly the first half. I will have to do it again soon so that more people can enjoy it and so that I can take pictures. I have forgotten my camera today! It was lovely to finish watching the sea and having some chips, relaxing in the sunshine. Awesome team, as usual.

Hi Neil, next time it'd be helpful and considerate if you take yourself off the waiting list the moment you make alternative plans. Regards

Grr... Engineering works on my train line to London Bridge tomorrow. Not happy to cycle all the way ftom Crystal Palace and add extra mileage to an already long ride. Will try to catch the first Overground to Surrey Quays and cycle to London Bridge from there.

    • Graham

The route goes through dulwich / south Croydon. Maybe that is easier to get to?

      August 24, 2013

    • Maggie

It actually goes via Crystal Palace, so I'll meet you there :)

That's a shame. I already have other plans for Sunday so will not be able to join if it's shifted. Understand your reasoning though. Enjoy, and see you another time.

    • Bea

Sorry Nichi :-( However, by the looks of some of the downpours I've seen during the morning I think it was the right decision.

I will be there tom, really don't mind if you want to go through boxhill, it's not hilly at all ! And also ditching beacons doable although it sounds hard. See you at 8.15, the first train gets there at precisely 8.15 am. I ll text you if there's a delay.

i dont like it when we postpone a ride .. it leads me to drink too much wine and eat too much bad food : /

Peeps, the forecast is getting worse. I wonder how everyone feels about moving the ride to Sunday? We're cycling enthusiasts but not masochists! I'm happy to move this ride to Sunday if most of you are happy with the change as well.

    2 · August 23, 2013

    • Maggie

Sunday sounds great - I'd be more than happy to move the ride :)

    Hi Bea,

Sorry but last minute plans with a friend from Singapore turning up on Saturday so have to unfortunately decline the Saturday ride. Will be up for Monday though! Have a great one!

    August 22, 2013

    • Bea

Hi Tinko, please only turn up on Monday if you are on the attendee list. Rides are strictly for 12 cyclists.

      August 22, 2013

  • Maggie

Guys, have you checked the weather forecast? Not to be a pessimist, but it doesn't look very encouraging :( Perhaps we could reschedule this ride for Monday, as it's looking much more pleasant?

    August 22, 2013

    • Bea

Hi Maggie, we're not going to Paris. It's a normal ride to Newhaven, testing our first leg of the Paris ride. I agree the forecast is looking rubbish. I also agree with Tom and that same example came to my mind. I don't like to set out with rain but I can't withhold the decision until Saturday at 8am! Therefore I suggest to keep the ride on. I will be at London bridge on Sat at the agreed time. If it's raining cats and dogs I won't start but if it's not then we can cycle as much and as far the weather allows us. We're never far from a railway station. Also,do join us on the Monday ride if you're free :-) To everyone: if the weather is putting you off (rightly so) please change your attendance status NOW so that I know how many people to expect. Cheers x

I'll be at London Bridge in the morning anyway and hope for the best :)

      August 22, 2013

Agreed Maggie looks like heavy rain in the morning. Would be up for Monday if the weather gods don't change the current forecast.
