  • More changes to this ride....

Toy Hill will have to feature in another ride. To "make up" Leith Hill will feature in this one as it will Box Hill. Lovely combo! This will be a short, sharp, hilly ride. Something to spice up your Saturday morning and give it an edge.

CHECK OUT THAT WE NOW START/FINISH AT LONDON BRIDGE AND THAT MEETING POINT IS NEXT TO THE TICKET OFFICE.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE'S A NEW RSVP POLICY SUBJECT TO PAYING YOUR TRAIN FARES/CONTRIBUTION FEE IN ADVANCE. PLEASE CHECK IT OUT (INCLUDING REFUNDS POLICY)HERE .

Start: We meet 8:00am at London Bridge, next to the ticket office. We will catch a train to Redhill. Our train departs at 8.20am so please arrive on time. We'd need approx £1 extra each to mak up for return tickets. However, also note that if we are not multiples of 4 the tickets will cost slightly more (i.e. £2/3 +). Will sort that out on the day.

Route: The route will be 41 miles long with a total elevation on3300ft. We'll climb Pebble Road Hill, Box Hill, Leith Hill and we'll return to Redhill! Missing a hill? Short but not sweet. This is a ride for strong cyclists and those wanting to atone any sins!

THIS IS THE ELEVATION GRAPH OF THE RIDE

PACE OF THE RIDE:  This will be a tough ride. The usual strong cyclists will be at the front enjoying the challenge. Definitely not for first timers or cyclists who have not cycled in a while. The distance is short but the elevation is very tough. Within reason we usually wait for slower riders but if you unduly slow down the group we may have to ask you to bail out. Please note railway stations to bail out are only after the hills so even bailing out will be at a cost.  Please check our pace policy HERE

If you are unsure about whether you will fit in with the group's pace feel free to drop me an email.

ATTENDANCE: Please only RSVP if your social/work calendar looks free for this date.   Please review our attendance/refund policy HERE. In order to get a refund you must cancel with at least 48hs notice (that is to say before Thursday midnight).

Stops: We don't really stop often. On this occasion, stops will be at the top of the hills to regroup as well as  toilet/mechanical stops as needed.

Lunch: This is a short ride. I expect to be back at Redhill by 1pm so on this occasion we will forego lunch. We may as well decide to have a drink at Box Hill.

What to bring: Please buy snacks in advance, loads of them.  You'll also need water to refuel regularly. Weatherproof gear. Spare inner tube(s), pump, a mobile phone and some cash. A  Helmet is mandatory when you ride with us.

HEALTH & SAFETY: Cycling is fun and safe but no sporting activity is risk-free. To minimise such risk when you take part in our rides you will be expected to ride safely, wearing a helmet and abiding by the Highway Code. No red light jumping, unexpected turns or dangerous overtaking will be accepted. If we feel you are putting other group members at risk you will be asked to bail out immediately. Please note that you join us at your own risk and that by joining us on this trip you understand, accept and agree to take all the risks inherent and expected from cycling on the roads exempting myself and your fellow riders for any accident/injury you may sustain. This should be read as a clause of exemption of liability for all purposes.

Return to London: We will catch a return train to London Bridge where I expect to arrive by 2pm.

Fees & Fares: The £6 charge will include your train ticket to London Waterloo (based on a group saver 4 thus subject to change on the date) + £1.5 contribution fee.

Weather: I will happily go ahead with forecast of drizzle and scattered showers. Anything less appealing like heavy rain and gusty winds will result in cancellation of the event IN WHIH CASE ALL FARES WILL BE REFUNDED. Apologies in advance.

One of the aims of the Cycling group is to appreciate of our natural surroundings, local towns and villages. We hope to minimise our impact by making sure that we are responsible for our litter. Please dispose of all of your litter and snack wrappers carefully".

No worries Watermelon! I've issued you with a refund. We may not ride ourselves if weather continues along these lines!

Peeps, we had forgotten about English weather but here it's back at its best. Saturday's forecast is very wet. From experience, we need to wait until Thursday to make decisions. However, bear in mind that this ride will not go ahead with rain. It's very challenging and we can't go up and down those hills with wet roads and rain in our face. I will keep you posted. It goes without saying that everyone will be fully refunded if the ride is cancelled :-(

There you. I mapped a new route the reverse way. We go up all the hills. Hooray now we have 400 more feet to climb! I've updated the elevation graph on the main body of the event description.

Would you be open to me riding back rather than getting the train? As I'm a south Londoner it would make more sense for me to zigzag it home on lanes. Plus opportunity to get a few extra miles in! Let me know either way, I understand if you want to keep it simple with everyone doing the same thing.

How do you make the cool elevation graph? :-)

I don't make it. It's generated by the website where I map my routes. Ridewithgps.com

Graham/Gaurav, I've moved the ride to Saturday with an early start. If this is not convenient for you then let me know and I will issue you with a refund. Apologies for the inconvenience, I was not aware of the Bikeathlon.

Hi Bea, unfortunately can't come on Saturday :-(

It might be worth doing this a different day as the London Bikeathon will be going up Box Hill, Leith Hill and White Down on the 15th making it quite crowded... How about we had further east instead keeping around Toys Hill on the Kent/Surrey borders?

    2 · September 2, 2013

    • Bea

Thanks for the info Nicky! I'm really keen on Box Hill and Pebble Hill (as it happens it's also on this route!!) so I'll move it to Saturday with an early start? I need to be back in London early.
