Weekend in the Cotswolds-Part 2

  • Jun 9, 2012 · 7:45 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Last weekend was by all means fantastic so I thought that before we lost momentum I'd organise a second Cotswolds' ride. We will be heading more westwards touching villages near Cheltenham, Cirencester, Gloucester and we may also toy with the Dean Forest and Wye Valley.

I found a nice independent hostel in Herefordshire off the border with Gloucestershire, at the foot of the Malvern Hills. We will keep the same structure, which has worked well last time and which lets us enjoy both the cycling and the social aspect of the event. We will do a loop starting and finishing at Swindon railway station passing along as many Cotsowlds villages as possible within a 60 mile route each day. Lots of countryside to explore with a good mix of steep hills and some gentler flats.

Before hitting the attend button you should know that.

1.Only those who are members of our Meet Up AND who have cycled with us before will be welcomed.

2.You and I should feel confident that you will be able to cycle two days in a row through challenging routes including steep hills and constant ups and downs.

3.You should be available for both days of the event.

4.Once you have paid for the accommodation and transport no refunds will be available, regardless of how much notice you provide (sorry, to keep prices down we go for non refundable/non-exchangable fares).

5.The ride will go ahead regardless of the weather.

Start: We meet 7.45am at Paddington and we'll take trains to Swindon where our ride will start at 9.30am. The return tickets will cost £20 (prices right on 23/4/12).

Route: We will start and finish our ride at Swindon although we will take different routes each day. The length of each ride will be about 60miles give or take 5 miles. However, expect a challenging elevation as the area is as hilly as it is beautiful! You have to be comfortable cycling at an average 15mph. If your average speed is any less you won't be suitable for this event as most of the other cyclists tend to cycle faster than me. Please be mindful that if you join a ride that is beyond your level you may be asked to bail out at the next station at your own cost. There's a strict rule that those who have not cycled with us before cannot join us for this event. Apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.

Stops: We usually only stop en route for quick snack or toilet breaks. We do not tend to have lunch during our ride. Therefore, make sure you're loaded with snacks and fuel bars to keep you going all the way.

OVERNIGHT STOP: We will be staying at an independent hostel, which will accommodate 12 people. Accommodation will be in mixed-sex rooms. Rooms accommodate 5, 3 and 2x2 people. The price is approx £13 per person per night. The hostel has secure storage to lock our bikes and kitchen facilities. The place is quite secluded so we could opt to buy some food and drinks and have a night in or there's a pub about 2.5 miles and a town within 4.5 miles.

What to bring: Road or hybrid bike in roady condition; snacks and water to refuel regularly (we will load again for our return trip on Sunday); water/wind proof gear; spare inner tube(s), pump, some cash, mobile phone. Lights and a Helmet. Yours and your fellow cyclist's safety is a priority so remember that "no helmet no ride". Maybe same change of clothes for cycling the day after and something to get comfy on Saturday evening? It's up to you but always aim at travelling light. Linen will be included and most probably towwels can be hired although I will further confirm this.

Return to London: On Sunday, after an early breakfast we will cycle our way back to Swindon. I will aim at a 10am start. We should get to Swindon no earlier than 4pm where we will get our trains back to London. Expect a late return, no earlier than 7pm

Weather: Hostel and train tickets will be booked in advanced therefore this ride will go ahead regardless of the weather.

COSTS/PAYMENT: £35 this will include your return train tickets and one night hostel accommodation in a Youth Hostel (mixed-sex dorms). Money will have to be transferred via paypal. Please be mindful that refunds won't be available once you send the payment although you may be able to find someone to take your place. This last option is subject to the person being deemed suitable to join the event. Please, also spare some cash for your meals, hiring towels, buying drinks, etc. I am not charging for this Meet Up, all costs reflect the transport/accommodation costs.

"One of the aims of the Cycling group is to appreciate of our natural surroundings, local towns and villages. We hope to minimise our impact by making sure that we are responsible for our litter. Please dispose of all of your litter and snack wrappers carefully".

Another amazing weekend with a great bunch of people. Beautiful tracks, a good laugh all the way and a very enjoyable overnight stay at the bunk house. The pub meal was absolutely fantastic and the whole evening was great fun. Thanks Ben for leading on Sunday and doing a superb job despite your aching. The glorious downhill of the first day is one of my best memories of the trip. A bid thank you to Mr Weather, which hold up for us all weekend!

That's great news (I mean the ones regarding the bike shed, not the weather forecast). Didn't have a chance to buy a helmet, but I'll nick one from my boyfriend. It's ginormous, so please pay no heed to the size of my head ;)

  • Bea

No locks needed. We have a bike shed for our bikes. With the wind and rain forecast expect an adventurous weekend!

    June 8, 2012

  • Maggie

Just a quick question: will we need our bicycle locks? I'd rather leave mine at home, as it's quite heavy...

Hello everyone! Hope you're making the most of this sunshine! Last call please. Two of you haven't paid for the train tickets yet and I'm specially interested in people letting me know if they want to hire sleeping bags as I have to let the hostel know. Sorry to keep nagging everyone, I'm a bit of an organiser freak! Have a lovely weekend x

    May 24, 2012

  • Bea

Oh no Alex! ahahaha we pay the £4 at the hostel! Don't worry, I'll pay yours now :-) x

    May 21, 2012

  • Alex

Alright, sending additional 4 quid to you

    May 21, 2012

  • Bea

@Alex: at £12 the accommodation is pretty basic. It's not a hostel, it's a bunkhouse and I have rented out the whole place for ourselves. The guy told me they have bunkbeds but we would need sleeping bags, which they can provide. I guess this is because they don't offer bedding. You will have to bring your own towel too. I hope it's not too bad. Pictures look alright. I'm sure we will have fun, if anything! Plus iit's only one night.

    May 21, 2012

  • Alex

why a sleeping bag? doesn't the hostel offer all bedding stuff? Or is to avoid people snoring? :D

    May 21, 2012

  • Timothy P.

    Hola Bea!

99.9% sure that I paid, but would also like a sleeping bag as they are a bit big to cycle with. Pay the hostel when we get there I guess.. Thanks again for all your hard work! It will be worth it! Tim

Hello people, hope you all had a great weekend. Could I kindly remind you that the transfer for the train tickets money is overdue now? If you haven't already could you please make sure I get the money asap? Also, those of you who'd like to hire the sleeping bag for your bunkbed (£4) let me know as I have to inform the hostel. Cheers

  • Bea

Morning people. Thanks to all of you have promptly sent the payment. Much appreciated. Please send me an email if you neeed the later trains. I already have two request for the 8.45. 2 more spaces left. But if you live far away the 8.30am will still be better than the 8.15am. I'll figure out how to give you the tickets in advance.

    May 18, 2012

  • Alex

    just paid ;)

    May 18, 2012

  • Maggie

I'd be more than happy to go on the 8:45 train - getting to Paddington from my neck of the woods might be a challenge :)

    May 18, 2012

  • Bea

Hey team, train tickets sorted including bike reservations. All group members have to travel together so I had to book us on 3 trains. X3 will travel in the 8.15am; x4 in the 8.30am; and x4 in the 8.45am. We should start cycling by 10am and hopefully get to the hostel by 5ish. Rebecca, you need to book your bike space. Could people please transfer via paypal £22.5 for the cost of the return tickets? Cheers

  • Maggie

It's been a while since I attended any of your rides, but I hope I'll be able to keep up :) Looking forward to it!

    May 14, 2012

  • Bea

Hello people, good news is that we have a team. Maggie will Bec joining us on this trip. I'll buy train tickets this week and will let you know the costs. Please email me if you won't be using the train (i.e. going to Swindon by car). Rebecca, confirm about your ticket too, please.

    May 14, 2012

  • Bea

Hello people, hope you're all well. This is just a polite reminder that transfer of the accommodation money is now overdue. Unfortunately, if you do not transfer £12 by this Friday I will have to take you off the attendee list and get someone else to take your place. This is to ensure that the event is full in order to keep costs low. To all of you who have already paid a big thank you! I will buy the train tickets next week and will let you know how much you need to transfer to that effect x
