Weekend in Weymouth

We've never been to this part of England before and my body and soul are screaming BEEAACHHHH! I need to enjoy some sandy beaches hopefully with sunshine included. The route is expected to be quite scenic around 80 miles each way. And we will spend one day exploring Portland Island and Weymouth.

Before hitting the attend button you should know that.

1.Only those who are members of our Meet Up AND who have cycled with us before will be welcomed.

2.You and I should feel confident that you will be able to cycle two days in a row through challenging routes including steep hills and constant ups and downs.

3.You should be able to take Monday off as this will be a three day event.

4.Once you have paid for the accommodation and transport no refunds will be available, regardless of how much notice you provide (sorry, to keep prices down we go for non refundable/non-exchangable fares).

5.The ride will go ahead regardless of the weather.

Start: We meet 7.45am at Paddington and we'll take trains to Swindon where our ride will start at 9.30am. The return tickets will cost £23 (prices right on 16/7/12).

Day 1: We will start our ride at Swindon and cycle approx 80 miles to Portland. Expect a challenging elevation as the area is as hilly as it is beautiful! You have to be comfortable cycling at an average 15mph. If your average speed is any less you won't be suitable for this event as most of the other cyclists tend to cycle faster than me.

DAY 2: We could spend the whole Sunday relaxing and exploring the area (Castles, hiking, crossing over to Weymouth, many activities are on offer) and Monday morning after breakfast we make a swift departure back to London.

DAY 3: On Monday, we will cycle 70 miles back to Winchester via Southampton and the New Forest. It's likely to be hilly again although you would have spend the whole previous day doing nothing so you should be fine!!! :-)

Stops: We usually only stop en route for quick snack or toilet breaks. We do not tend to have lunch during our ride. Therefore, make sure you're loaded with snacks and fuel bars to keep you going all the way.

TWO NIGHTS STOP: We will be staying at a a Youth Hostel in Portland Island. We will spend two nights here. Accommodation is in shared same sex dorms. The price is approx £47 per person for both nights.

What to bring: Road or hybrid bike in roady condition; snacks and water to refuel regularly (we will load again for our return trip on Sunday); water/wind proof gear; spare inner tube(s), pump, some cash, mobile phone. Lights and a Helmet. Yours and your fellow cyclist's safety is a priority  so remember that "no helmet no ride". Maybe same change of clothes for cycling the day after and something to get comfy on Saturday evening? It's up to you but always aim at travelling light. Linen will be included and most probably towels can be hired although I will further confirm this.

Return to London: On Monday, from Winchester. Trains return to Waterloo and Paddington. Expect a late return, no earlier than 8pm

Weather: Hostel and train tickets will be booked in advanced therefore this ride will go ahead regardless of the weather.

COSTS/PAYMENT: £70 this will include your return train tickets and two night hostel accommodation in a Youth Hostel (mixed-sex dorms). Money will have to be transferred via paypal. Please be mindful that refunds won't be available once you send the payment although you may be able to find someone to take your place. This last option is subject to the person being deemed suitable to join the event. Please, also spare some cash for your meals, hiring towels, buying drinks, etc. I am not charging for this Meet Up, all costs reflect the transport/accommodation costs.

"One of the aims of the Cycling group is to appreciate of our natural surroundings, local towns and villages. We hope to minimise our impact by making sure that we are responsible for our litter. Please dispose of all of your litter and snack wrappers carefully".

It was great! Lovely people... I rode with my saddle too high, which destroyed my achilles tendons..big lesson learnt for next time!

Fab weekend in the South West England! Despite the persistent and annoying rain of the first day I am still up for 5 stars for this trip. We had so much fun and the tracks we cycled were amazing. I'd love to repeat the event on a sunny weekend. The hostel couldn't be better located, the Saturday meal was out of this world, the Rodwell trail offered fantastic views of Weymouth and reaching the top of Portland and then going all the way down (that was just for Monica, Nicki and I) was trully awesome. Thanks to everyone for making this weekend so memorable!

Hey guys, I've updated the route in the last bit. There was an off road bit plus I've added the Rodwell Trail which is very beautiful. I will upload the updated route tonite.

Hi team, please make sure you all pack your canoes and your snorkels. Considering the weather they will serve us better than our bikes!!!

Hey Bea, I don't have a strong opinion either way so am happy to go with either option.

Hi peeps, sorry to insist but because it's not just my money I need to check with you. If I use the spare £20 plus a bit more (on me as it was my mistake chosing the start point) I could extend our tickets to Bath. This was we could cycle 75 miles rather than 105, arriving earlier and less tired at Weymouth. Are you ok with this?

    July 3, 2012

  • Bea

Hey guys, I was thinking that if we started our ride from Bath then we would be able to do it in 75 miles. I can either change our tickets (dunno if I can do that yet) or alternatively buy us extra tickets for the section Swindon-Bath (it's the same train). I could do that with the money that I've saved us earlier. Would you like me to do that? This way we would arrive earlier and fresher to Portland to enjoy the rest of the day. Let me know. Majority wins. x

:)) Bea i though it was all about Sun and Beach !!! xx

    June 26, 2012

  • Bea

Ehhhh, I have something to confess...not sure how to say this...Day 1 will be 100 miles rather than 80. Please don't hate me. I will try to make up the day after with a shorter ride plus the hostel is very nice, really...

Happy Friday everybody! A quick reminder that you'll need to pay for this event by tomorrow evening. I will book trains and accommodation on Sunday evening. If you have any problems paying now just contact me and let me know :-)

    June 22, 2012

  • Bea

Ok guys, by overwhelming majority will do this as a weekend event returning on the Sunday. Tonite I will let you know final costs. Plan would be the same without the chilling out middle day. It should still be a great trip.
@Nicky: some people use panniers. Others, me included, are Carradice fans. Check out their website. The Nelson or Pendle saddlebag should do the job!

Hey Bea, my preference would be for a Saturday / Sunday trip, Ollie

I won't be able to take Monday off work, so Sat & Sun sounds perfect to me! Bonkers!!!

    June 19, 2012

  • nickycast

My preference would also be to ride consecutive days to avoid using a day's holiday.

    June 19, 2012

  • nickycast

Looking forward to this. One question though - what recommendations are there for carrying change of clothes etc? Will folk be adding a rack and panniers to their road bike? I'm keen to keep weight to a minimum!

    June 19, 2012

  • Bea

If most of you can't take Monday off then we will do it a proper weekend event instead returning on Sunday.

Sounds good! Fore those of you that cycled on the Cotswolds part 2 here is the link to the "pole" http://www.topeak.com/products/StorageAndDisplay/Dual-TouchBikeStand. not cheap about 120 squids (google shopping) but a good solution compared to drilling holes in the walls. Ollie
