This ride had been scheduled for the early Summer but on the date heavy downpours resulted in a regretful cancellation. I hope that we are lucky on our second attempt and I would love this one to be our farewell ride before our cycling holiday in Germany. The route will go along the beautiful tracks of Epsom, Billinghurst, West Chillington and Arundel.
I have made sure (double sure!) that we don't have to share the route with cattle this time. And I have also included fantastic Weare St at Ockley village as part of the ride.
At our destination we will enjoy views of the Castle and should the weather be kind enough we may want a dip in the open lido. Those who are water shy could wait for the rest of us at one of the many pubs on the bank of the river Arun where we will have lunch. If we have a sunny day this ride should be a winner!

Start: 8.45am we meet at Clapham Junction. I will start promptly at 9am. Please arrive on time.
Route: The ride is relatively short at 60 miles. I have remapped this route to make the elevation gentler given that the following Monday I set off for our German Tour and I don't want to burn out all my energy on this ride. Maximum elevation will be 631ft and the average gradient 9%.
Pace: The group has got fitter and we tend to go faster. Think no less than 16mph average (easily we hit 20mph in flat terrain).
What happens if I can't keep up with the pace: You will be asked to drop out. If there's a rail station en route you will be led to it but you may as well have to find your own way if there's no rail station nearby.
Stops: Just one before we arrive in Arundel, that is with exception of any needed loo or p*ncture stop. Lunch will be late upon arriving at Arundel. I expect to arrive at Arundel no later than 3pm. That should give us time for lunch and maybe a visit to the Lido too.
THE LIDO & THE CASTLE: there are two heated pools and the entry fee is £6.5. The pools are open until 19hs. More info may be found here. The castle is the seat of the Duke of Norfolk and it is one of the great treasure houses of England. Entry fees start at £10 and the the last admission is at 4pm. If we get there on time and don't fancy the lido you may want to have a look around. However, our route should alow us a good view of the castle even if we do not get in. More info here.
What to bring: road or light hybrid bike in roady conditions; loads of snacks and water to refuel regularly; weatherproof gear; spare inner tube(s), pump, some cash, HELMET...Hopefully you will also need some sun tan lotion and a swimming suit.
Return to London: We have two trains per hour to London Victoria (and a more expensive option to London Bridge). Tickets should cost about £8 if we buy them with group savers.
Weather : The ride will go ahead with grey cloud, drizzle or light rain. I will however cancel if the forecast is heavy rains or strong winds. This may result in last minute cancellations for which I apologise in advance.
"One of the aims of the Cycling group is to appreciate of our natural surroundings, local towns and villages. We hope to minimise our impact by making sure that we are responsible for our litter. Please dispose of all of your litter and snack wrappers carefully".
