New Meetup: Cycle Ride - NE London Canals & Olympic Sites + Bonus Outdoor Swim

Announcing a new Meetup for Cycling Meetup Group!

What: Cycle Ride - NE London Canals & Olympic Sites + Bonus Outdoor Swim

When: Sunday, October 31,[masked]:00 AM

Where: Paddington Mainline Station (outside WH Smith)
Paddington
London

NOTE THAT THE CLOCKS GO BACK ON THE DAY OF THE RIDE, SO AN EXTRA HOUR IN BED - YIPPEE!

Ride length: approximately 25 miles, over 90% off road.
Pace: very sociable, with a refreshment stop halfway and at the end of the ride and other random stops for photos, sightseeing and sharing interesting anecdotes.
Route: starting at Paddington mainline station (at 10:00 sharp!), we will ride eastwards along the Grand Union canal to the Lee Navigation and Stratford for a grandstand view of the Olympic sites and a coffee stop. Then a further circuit of east London's outfall sewers, canals (including an ornamental variant), marinas and even a short section of the Thames path to finish up at a pub in London Fields (Hackney) at ~15:00. Bring a cossie if you also fancy joining me for a swim in the heated open air pool at the end!
Surface: a mix of tarmac, gravel and concrete block paths, but with some cobbled sections and stretches with very bumpy surfaces, so suitable for hybrid and MTB cycles only. All out road bikes will struggle.
Getting to start: bikes can be taken to Paddington on mainline trains and the Hamersmith & City, District and Circle lines (but all are affected by engineering works and the Circle line is closed on 31 Oct anyway!), but not on the Bakerloo line.
Getting away from end: mainline trains from London Fields (Liverpool Street to Enfield Town line) or the East London Overground line from Haggerston take bikes.
Bike Hire: please arrange this yourselves if required.
Miscellaneous: Obviously bring an operable bike (with lights, as may be getting dark by end of ride), suitable clothing for the weather, spare inner tube, pump, lock(s) and food / drink. It is also advised to make sure that you have a bell / whistle to warn pedestrians and dogs of your presence!
