75 kms to Cumberland / Masson-Angers and back

Please join us for a bike ride to Masson-Angers this coming Saturday.

Itinerary

Suggested itinerary is to ride to Cumberland (using Old Montreal Road from Petrie Island), use the ferry to cross the river to Masson-Angers, take a break (lunch and/or drinks and/or icecream), and head back.

The total distance is about 75 km.  The trip could take anywhere between 5 to 6 hours.  We will be cycling on paved roads, bike lanes, and bike paths.  There are no gravel paths on our way.  However, we may run into some road construction on Sussex Drive and Old Montreal Road.

The ferry fee for one cyclist (plus bike) is $2 (one-way).

Departure Point

You will see a big "R. H. Coats Building" sign at the north-west corner of Scott & Parkdale; we'll be close to the sign, near the benches under the trees. There's a Quickie Mart just across the street in case you need water/juice, food, cash (CIBC ATM), etc.

The exact coordinates are here: https://goo.gl/maps/E2tDU

Final Notes

* Please be at the meeting point on time.  We will leave at 11am.
* Bring $4 for the ferry return trip.
* When we reach Masson-Angers, we will probably stop at the O'Max restaurant.  If there is not enough space to accommodate us, we will continue further north to the strip mall which has a few fast-food restaurants (Subway, Tim Horton's, a cremerie, etc.)
* Bring a repair kit for your bike and enough cab/bus money to get you home, in case your bike has a mechanical failure.
* Bring a simple first-aid kit for yourself, even if it is just a few tissues and Band-Aids.
* We will try to ride together at a leisurely pace (20-25 km/hr), but if you fall behind, you have two options: you can turn around, or you can try to meet up with us in Masson-Angers.  We will be either at the  O'Max restaurant or at the strip mall further north.
* If possible, bring your cell-phone with you (for emergencies, and to get in touch with us).
* Here is the route for the trip: https://goo.gl/maps/9CBab

Could we organize one on a Sunday morning?

When is the next ride ?

    August 11, 2014

  • martin

Yes, excellent ride and I would be happy to start at 10am too.

    August 11, 2014

  • George S.

Excellent ride, however, start time would be better at 10:00am. and when there are more than 14 people a second tour leader should be appointed to assist. I will try to find other routes of comparable distance. Thanks Ghasson.

Ok I am new to this posting and all my other comments are not posted below. ?????
I don't want my suggestions to sound too negative. They do not diminish what was a very good day and ride with a great bunch of cyclists.
A big thank you to Ghassan for organizing, welcoming, taking care of everyone, and the photos.
A few people had either a mechanical issue or a flat enroute. When this happens it is nice to have a group with you. I saw areas I wouldn't bike to on my own. So overall very good day. Thanks everyone!!!!!!

Overall a very good day and ride. I would prefer though that rides started earlier. 11 am is late start for a full day ride, especially in summer heat. Might b ok for shorter fall rides. I would also prefer not to b on crowded bike paths in central downtown tourist areas like market area and parliament hill. Too crowded, uneven pavement, therefore risk of collisions and crashes, especially for those of us that are clipped in. A ride going east might have better started somewhere east of downtown, like avaiation parkway/museum, which we rode by.

Thanks to all who came out and made this a memorable ride. Congratulations to those on hybrids and mountain bikes who did not give up and persevered until the end.

I'm not going to be able to go due to family commitments - any chance anyone has a garmin 305/705/805 that can record and then post the ride after you are done? Let's those of us with a "honey-do" list attempt it at 7am and be back in time for lunch...

  • Hamed

Do we need to bring lock for our bike too?

    August 9, 2014

    • Ghassan

Yes, you may need it when we stop in Masson-Angers.

      August 9, 2014

  • Heather

Is it ok for newer road cyclists (i.e. not very fast) to join?

    August 8, 2014

    • Alexis

      My apologies, everyone is included.

      August 8, 2014

    • Ghassan

Hi Heather. If, after reading the final description, you think the pace is not too fast for you, we hope you can join us. You can always turn around at the Aviation Museum if the pace is too fast. It'll be a beautiful day for a long bike ride.

Is it OK to share this with some biking groups (local) on FaceBook?

    August 8, 2014

    • Jamie C.

For the life of me I can't figure out how to share the event! I can share it to individuals, but not on my page. Oh well!

    August 7, 2014

Yes, we will try to ride together (at least initially). Please see the Final Notes (which I just added) in the description above,

It's free in the Tunney's Pasture parking lot on weekends and weekday evenings.

      August 7, 2014

  • Michèle L.

The road is open with no issues at the moment. I presume they forgot to take down the detour signs . Everything looks good to Cumberland.

    August 6, 2014

  • Michèle L.

Just a you know old Montreal rd is closed between trim and Quigley hill due to construction. Detour on highway 17 or up to innes

    August 5, 2014

    • Ghassan

Thanks, Michele. Old Montreal Road was closed when I cycled there about two weeks ago , but I just called the City Of Ottawa and they assured me that Old Montreal Road was re-opened last Friday (before the long weekend). Let us know if you know otherwise.

      August 6, 2014

  • Alexis

Great Ghassan, for taking this on.

    August 6, 2014

  • Mana

Will this ride be on flat surface?

    August 5, 2014

    • Ghassan

Mostly flat, with a few hills (Rideau Canal locks, Old Montreal Road).

      August 5, 2014

  • sherie

should we be doing this on mountain bikes or road bikes?

    August 5, 2014

    • Ghassan

Whatever you're most comfortable with, Sherie.

      August 5, 2014

    • Julien L.

I would say road or hybrid for sure!!!!!!

      August 5, 2014

  • Sophie

Can't make this one unfortunately. I have swim training on Saturdays.

    August 4, 2014

    • Ghassan

No problem, Sophie. I will do this ride more than once this season before winter sets in. Have a good swim training.

I did this ride last weekend and it was very nice. However one thing to note is that Old Montreal Road was closed east of Trim Road. I ended up having to take Trim road south to Innes and then took Innes east to Dunning Road then north back up to Cumberland. It ended up being around 80km from downtown Ottawa.

    August 4, 2014

    • Ghassan

      Thanks for the heads-up, Paul.

      August 4, 2014

  • Alexis

70KM COMPLETED!!: Quiet roads, lots of cycle space on the roads. A little rain in the morning but the weather held up. Some beautiful areas. Will do this ride again end of October when I get back from vacation. Thanks.

Lets Do This: Who wants to do this ride with me.
Sunday Sept 22nd - Meet at 9:15am and start 9:30 sharp.
We'll meet at Middle Street - Just off Booth - in the parking lot
Most of this ride will be on roads (a blinking light would be a good extra precaution). There's construction in some areas, some gravel and tight spots. It's an adventure. Bring water and powerbars or snacks. See you there.

    September 18, 2013

  • Julien L.

Happy to see that there's lots of interest for it. But unfortunately I won't have the time to organize before October, hence probably not this year. I'm happy to give assistant organizer privileges to whomever is willing to organize this.
    1. Creating a separate meetup event to refresh the RSVPs. Co-organizers can easily copy events.
    2. Have it announced at least a week ahead.

On a different topic, if I may permit myself a shameless plug, Fair Vote Canada is having two events this week: our chapter AGM on Tuesday evening (http://www.fairvotecanadancr.ca/?q=node/74) and a campaign launch on the Hill Thursday afternoon (http://www.meetup.com/fvc-ottawa/events/137836102/). I'm assuming many cyclists have concerns about the environment when they go to the ballot box. We desperately need a change in voting system for those votes to count.

I agree. I would love to do this ride before it gets too cold. Let's pick a date!
