Happy New Year 28 mile Cary Greenway Ride! (Intermediate)

Have you ever been to Umstead on the first pretty day of Spring and it seems as if half the Metro showed up to finally fulfill their New Years resolution to get into shape? Suppose you were already in great shape because you had never put the bike up all winter? It is always more difficult to re-start something than it is to continue so we'll take a few days to recuperate from our New Years festivities and then hit the trails!

This ride takes us from Lake Crabtree via the Black Creek and Northwoods Greenways to downtown Cary. We will need to take a few city streets for a couple of miles then pick up the Black Creek Greenway again which will lead us to the Whiteoak Greenway. This will take us west into to Apex, under I540 and ending at Green Level Church Rd. Its 14 and change out and back for a 28+ miler. It is a pretty flat ride as I recall with the exception of a few good climbs early in the ride.

When we return we can load our bikes and gather at the Carolina Cafe and Bakery at the Arboretum on Weston for an after ride Coffee or snack.

For those of you concerned about the city streets we have really developed a great system over the past few rides of staying in a group and looking out for each other. When we detour on a city street we do so as a group and claim our lane. Because the Greenways aren't all connected we will need to do this a couple of times but I have limited the detours as best I can.

We will meet at 10:00 a.m. and depart at 10:15. Snow, sleet or freezing rain will be the only deal breaker! A little known fact; engines produce more horse power in cold weather :)

Fantastic ride everyone, you guys are awesome. My first time in Umstead, that was a great suggestion Kim. Good training for climbing and cornering downhill. As always, great hanging out afterwards.

Excellent ride and a great group of riders. Thanks Kim for the endurance training trip through Umstead.

Theme song for the first leg of this ride ICE ICE baby. No floods, ice, rain , climbs and freezing (rediculous cold) weather stops this party of 8. I had forgotten how much fun Umstead can be. Thank you all for the company :-)

Can we say climb Climb CLIMB! Awesome ride we will have to do an umstead ride sometime. Glad to see that a little cold weather didn't stop us from having a great time!

Well I feel a little embarrassed. Was planning on going but I have not worn my cold weather gear for a couple of years. Living in Colorado and Wyoming and have a lot, but tonight as I pulled it out to dust it off and try it on it no longer fits. I gained too much weight and my gear doesn't snap or button around me. So I've got to bail the trip tomorrow. Guess I really need to join you on some warmer days and loose the excess pounds. Sorry about the late notice. I'll join you some other time.

Myself and my plus one will not make it. It makes more logistical sense for us to hop on the greenway near my casa down in southern Cary and make our way north, then return home riding south. We'll be sure and keep an eye out for you and say hello if we pass! Looking forward to joining you on another ride soon. Speed safely, Josh M.

Kim, given the temps tomorrow, might it be feasible to move the ride to after 12:00? Still cold, but as warm as the day gets.

In addition, dusk/late afternoon biking on public streets can be dangerous with the long winter shadows.

      Kim, no worries. Thanks.

spot opened for me, but now can't make it. I'm not afraid of the cold, but have to be somewhere at 11am now. Bummer! hope there will be more of these at this location!

    • Kim

Thanks for letting us know. Could you kindly change your rsvp. Thanks. I'm sure this ride will post again soon.

      January 3, 2014

  • Kim

Yes, it will be very cold. My experience has been warming up in a matter of 15-20 minutes into the ride. Also, if your gloves aren't warm (and mine aren't) you can wear a pair of latex surgical gloves underneath your regular gloves. My hands stay nice and toasty but they will sweat albeit I'm unaware until the gloves come off.

What Kim said. You will feel the cold the first 10 minutes or so. The greater concern is to have wicking inner layers to wick away perspiration. Wool socks or wool blend are great for wicking. Multlple thin layers that allow movement and can be vented or removed are also key. Silk glove and foot liners are great for wicking as well.

Timberland has cloth "skull caps" (see Shawn P) that fit nicely under helmets and capture body heat. Got one today at Smithfield Outlet for 8 bucks; they also have socks on sale.

Okay, I'm bailing. Even if it hits a high of 35 tomorrow, travelling at 12 miles an hour equals a wind chill of 17 degrees. That's a bit much for me. Have fun and be careful out there!

    January 3, 2014

    • KathleenL

Lori, according to Weather.com, it's supposed to be 30 degrees at ride time with a wind chill of 25, but you have to add the additional wind chill from cycling. A pace of 12 mph comes to about 14 degrees at ride time. By 1:00, it's supposed to be 40 degrees out with a wind chill of 37. With the wind chill from cycling, it will feel like 29 degrees. Anything below freezing is outside my limits!

      January 3, 2014

    • Lori

Yep I'm not built for this! Had to bail darn! I can hike in this, but not cycle. I have some cold weather gear, but I still think this is too cold for me for cycling.

Can someone give me a close address for my GPS so I can find our meetup location? It would be much appreciated.

    January 3, 2014

    • Kim

Doug - I don't know if there is a proper address. If you click on the link of the address above it should take you to google maps. There you can enter your start address. Coming in from the I40 you will take Exit 287 - N. Harrison to Weston Pkwy - Old Reedy Creek. I clicked on the link and it worked for me. Hope this helps.

The clip on my bike shoes broke off - I've had them for 14 years - what's everyone's favorite?

    January 3, 2014

    • Jack

Ricci, if the broken "clip" is a buckle on the top of the shoe to close the shoe, then those are often replaceable. As for favorites... Like other shoes, it all depends on the fit on your own foot. I like Sidi brand because they fit my narrow feet, but many folks with wider feet don't like them much at all. My suggestion is to go to a well-stocked bike shop and try some on. -Jack

I'm bailing as well. Too cold, but I sure hope you do this same route again soon.

This really bums me out but I have a project I'm going to need Saturday to finish:(. Kim will be your awesome host!

Brrrr. May the force be with you.

This ride is for Saturday, correct? The forecasted wind chill at ride time is 26 degrees. Just sayin'.

Something came up for Sunday, so I will not be attending, I have changed my RSVP... Wish everyone a great ride and maybe the weather will warm up some for you all..!!

28 miles! wow that's a little to much for me. I think I will stick to the beginner routes. Have fun and I hope the weather cooperates.

    January 1, 2014

    • Kim

Hey Becky - I will post some beginner routes soon. The weather for Sunday isn't looking very promising so I haven't posted anything yet. Hope to see you on the trail soon. Kim

Hello & Happy New Year everyone! Is anyone commuting up from Cary via automobile and have room for a couple dudes and there bikes? Or, is anyone riding there bicycle north from Cary for the meet up at 10am?

    January 2, 2014

    • Josh M.

Please disregard my first question regarding carpooling. It makes more sense to drive and park at the trail head like everyone else and do the loop :-)

      January 2, 2014

    • George S.

Hi Josh! Welcome to CFH! This ride is full and you're on the wait list. If a number of "yes" RSVP change to "no" you will be added to the ride. I limit the number of participants when an event has a lot of turns. It lessens the chance of folks getting lost. Other rides have no limits. Keep and eye out for future events. Rides with RSVP limits fill up pretty quickly. If you do get in for this Saturday I'm sure someone will be able to help you get there. Thanks for joining up and happy New Year!

Assuming that I get in, is this a hybrid or road bike route?

    December 16, 2013

    • George S.

We took one ride from the museum through Umstead to lake Crabtree and back. Reedy Creek rd and Graylin works with most people's bikes. I probably wouldn't schedule anything for north and south Turkey creek roads though.

      December 16, 2013

    • Ann G

I like riding the hybrid on the Umstead horse gravel roads through the woods. Very beautiful but probably on the intermediate to advanced level.

      December 16, 2013

  • Krista

Can't make it, but hope we get to do this route again sometime.

    December 9, 2013

Next time I'll make it a loop :)

I swear I'll do a ride with you guys one day...

    1 · December 9, 2013

There's a big climb between Maynard and Chapel Hill Rd and one between Godbold Park and Dynasty.

    December 9, 2013

    • George S.

Yea, those are the ones I remember. Perhaps I understated the difficulty a little. Thanks again!

      December 9, 2013

  • KathleenL

George, there are some seriously steep climbs on the Black Creek Greenway.

    December 9, 2013

    • George S.

Thanks Kathleen! I recall the climb from Lake Crabtree as well as around Dynasty Rd an Maynard. Are you referring to those or the second leg of the Black Creek going to Bond Park?
