Spoon, Sonic Youth, PJ Harvey, Sufjan Stevens, Fugazi, Peter Murphy, Portishead, Mission of Burma, Beth Orton, The Meat Puppets, Old 97s, Lucinda Williams, and Calexico are old favorites. Warpaint, The Joy Formidable, The Pain of Being Pure of Heart, St Vincent, The Dum Dum Girls, Eleanor Friedberger, Wild Flag,Yuck,Beirut, and Blonde Redhead are newer (relatively) bands that come to mind. I hope that The Dismemberment Plan stays together in this go-around. A fan of techno too but that's a whole different scene.
The Black Cat. Good sight lines, reasonably good sound system, great bands. The Rock n Roll Hotel gets great bands and now has a good sound system, but the sight lines are awful. The Velvet Lounge has been really good bands recently. And, of course, there is the 9:30 club.
Been seeking out new and original bands all my life. I am the elder statesman of this scene. I formed a small "Aging Hipsters" group long before there was meetup and have been to well over a 200 shows at both the Black Cat and the 9:30 Club.
