Group Buy VII

  • Aug 21, 2013 · 12:00 PM

The sixth group buy is open!
Deadline is Wednesday Aug 21 at NOON.

http://store.dcdrone.org

This is an opportunity to get any parts you need for the upcoming workshop in September!

DO NOT HESITATE to e-mail or post in this event for questions you may have BEFORE you buy. This is a community effort!

Also please feel free to make suggestions about what should be changed on the group buy.

You can also use the group buy store to contribute a donation to DC DUG. These funds will be used for administrative fees (like keeping our web sites up), hosting events, and more.

Christopher, I was wondering if the order has come in yet. Will you be bringing everything to the build party? Thanks.

  • Christopher V.

The group orders have been made. I will update individual order statuses as parts come in.

Where and when can we pick up the drones we purchased from the group buy?

    August 21, 2013

    • Christopher V.

I am doing the group purchases now and we expect the parts within 2-3 weeks. Check your order status; if it says "Packed", you will be able to pick up the parts at Nova Labs or at the build workshop. If there are special circumstances you can e-mail me; I can ship items if needed too

Crap, got sidetracked by some work and forgot to place my order!

I'd like to finally purchase my first drone, but will be in Europe during the scheduled build party. Should I wait until the next group buy?

Strange. Which browser are you using? Several people seem to be having completely different issues with the cart interface.

      Chrome, on a mac

Missed this one, how often does a group buy happen?

    August 21, 2013

    • Christopher V.

About once every two months, but the format may change next time, we may introduce a different group buying system to simplify it from the an administrative standpoint.

I'm so close to pulling the trigger on this, but I really want something with FPV and a GoPro. How difficult is it to add an FPV setup and a GoPro to this frame in the future? I'm guessing there won't be time to set that up at the workshop.

    August 21, 2013

    • Christopher V.

Many, many people have done it. I can help you with that. It's easiest to add FPV and GoPro to the kit hexacopter, but you can cram it onto a quadcopter too. The quad can definitely carry the payload, it's more an issue of mounting space. You can also get replacement plates that are compatible with the kit copter, look for "TBS Discovery", it's a frame designed specifically for FPV. The mounting hole pattern for the top/bottom plates they designed also fit the arms of the kit copter.

      August 21, 2013

    • Bryan S.

Actually, the TBS Discovery is the main copter I've been looking to get. Then I found this group a few days ago and I figured I would start with what was in the DCDUG store since I'm a newbie to RC builds. TBS also has a long backlog of orders due to a move and illnesses and I'm not sure I could get their frame in time. But ultimately I would like to go with their set-up for FPV.

Oh, never mind. Whatever was ailing irixmedia has passed. Full functionality came back a minute ago. Sorry for the message storm.

FYI, in case it helps anyone else, I couldn't successfully add items to my cart until I created an account/logged in.

Hello, My name is David Gray and I'm a university professor in North Carolina. I'll like to buy a UAV copter for use with my students ... to demo technological capability and applications. I'd like to mount camera (video with downlink). It will not be used for 24/7/365 heavy use, but just to demo the capability. I've talked with 3drobotics. Again, I'd like to buy a platform with camera. I'd appreciate information or suggestions. Please contact me at [masked] /[masked] off /[masked] cell. Thanks in advance for your help or if you have other contacts that would be useful and helpful. Best, David

Anybody have experience with the dji phantom?

    August 19, 2013

    • Christopher V.

i've flown one. great machine. flies smoothly and easily and carries a GoPro just fine. not very flexible in terms of carrying larger cameras or much more gear, but somewhat moddable and definitely worth looking at if you're a beginner interested in basic aerial video.

I should be more specific about my previous message. I can "Add to Cart" if I'm picking individual parts on the Parts page but not if I'm working on the Multirotor Guided Build Kit page. Is this how people are ordering their kit---part by part?

    August 18, 2013

  • Kent

Any idea why the "Add to Cart" function fails on all my browsers (Chrome and Firefox on Linux, them and also MSIE on MSWindows)? Is there something funky going on with iron.irixmedia.com which is being blocked by the usual anti-badness filters? I had no difficulty using these browsers to sign up both on store.dcdrone.com and the dcdrone portion of www.meetup.com.

Can't order the parts if I can't get them into my shopping cart.

    Chris,

Last we spoke you said the Naza is a really solid GPS module and the compass works great. Does the Naza GPS module work with the APM2's? Where is the best place to get one?

    Thanks,

    Aaron

    August 7, 2013

    • Christopher V.

No, the Naza GPS unit does not work with the APM2.5. However, 3drobotics has released a new version of the APM which has the ability to separate the compass from the rest of the electronics. This combined with the latest ArduCopter software should be quite good in terms of things like simple mode and navigation. If you just want to improve the GPS on the ArduCopter you may consider moving your GPS unit away from other electronics (e.g. using standoffs), obtaining a more expensive GPS module like the LEA-6 or LEA-7, and/or tuning your PIDs to improve how the ArduCopter handles GPS-guided control. If you want to obtain a Naza-M v2 with GPS I can hook you up, they're about $449. The NAZA is extremely solid and stable, and has a pretty cool "intelligent orientation control" mode which lets you fly-by-compass.

Excited about purchasing my first drone! So it looks like there are a lot of add-ons that add to the base price, but if it is my first time building one, what are the basics that I definitely need to get versus nice-to-haves? I am hoping that I can upgrade, and not spend too much up front.

    August 7, 2013

    • Christopher V.

you'd need at least the battery, battery charger + power supply, flight controller (apm2.5 clone with gps and telemetry). i recommend using anderson power poles as the power connector, upgrade to HP2212 motors, lipo battery arm, and R/C wire kit. sorbothane gel is not strictly necessary, but a plus. most of the other stuff you can get at a local hardware store, so you can buy it from the group buy or just pick it up yourself.

Think there was an option to just buy a replacement case for the RCTimer. Is that still available, didnt see it in the store. I stripped the threading on my case pretty quickly and think I'm not the only one.

    August 10, 2013

    • Christopher V.

you can purchase a case from 3drobotics directly for $5 or get the even cheaper option on hobbyking. the hobbyking version is more likely to fit rctimer and hobbyking clone APM2 boards, because the clones are a few mils thicker than the original 3drobotics boards. however, you can get the original 3drobotics cases to fit better if you shave down some plastic on the inside of of their cases.

Three quick questions for those in the know

The two upgrade options for 40A OPTO ESC and the HP2212 motors: how much additional power/flexibility does this give? Is it worth it for a first model? (I will be looking to put a camera mount on it eventually)

As far as pre-build, my soldering skills are a bit better than basic, but not much. How tricky is the APM board? I'd like to do it if possible, but if it's really delicate...

Any specific tools needed for the build?

    Thanks

    Looking forward to it!

    August 5, 2013

    • Christopher V.

You don't really need the 40A ESC for the kit platform, 30A is quite sufficient. The 40A ESC is included as an option for those who want to upgrade later to a larger frame + motors + props. 2212 motors are an improvement to the 2830 motors mostly in build quality, but in other characteristics such as power it is very close to the 2830 motors. The APM board is not that hard to solder, but it takes a lot of time. I highly recommend paying someone to do it ahead of time, if you do that much then I guarantee you'll have a drone flying by the end of the workshop.

      August 5, 2013

    • Eric R.

Thanks Chris: one more question. I assume that if I go for the motor upgrade I won't need the optional screw in prop adapter for the 2830s?

Is there anyway to see all the questions w/answers asked from previous group buys? . . .A Group Buy FAQ perhaps?
