Group Buy VIII

  • October 9, 2013 · 12:00 PM

The eighth group buy is open!
Deadline is Wednesday October 9 at NOON.

http://store.dcdrone.org

This is an opportunity to group-buy parts!

PLEASE E-MAIL or POST IN THE FORUMS if you have questions! You DO NOT have to be alone, this is a community effort and we're here to help you! I realize that there's a lot of options on the store, and not much documentation yet to help you decide what to get.

I may be adding things to the store as we go along, like:

Tarot T-2D Gimbal - very popular little brushless gimbal that is designed specifically for stabilizing footage from the GoPro HERO 3.

More custom mounts and parts.

The group build should be on or around Nov. 4th.

You can also use the group buy store to contribute a donation to DC DUG. These funds will be used for administrative fees (like keeping our web sites up), hosting events, and more.

I know it's last minute, but I was about to send order and found this.

Scroll down to the statement under "ATTENTION"

They make this claim and I wondered, since these parts seem to be coming from China, if there might be an issue? I don't have the knowledge to make an informed judgement, any thoughts Christopher?

Good point. The US always thinks they make things better, but I drive a Toyota for a reason. I decided to buy power supply locally anyway, as I have a solar power source I want to try out. Thanks for your input.

You're probably going to see more and more drone parts being made in Mexico as the personal and civilian drone market ramps up here in the USA.

Hmmm. When I create and login on the store, the url is dcdrone.org, but when I go to shop for a quadcopter, it's irixmedia.com. On that url, it's saying I'm not logged in and won't allow me to Add to Cart. What do?

Nevermind. If you click on the Multiroter Guided Build instead of the link above it, you stay on dcdrone.org...

What tx/rx do you you recommend or how should I decide how many channels I need. I am looking to do some photography.

    • Christopher Vo

A tx/rx is an investment, but you'll be fine with anything that has more than 7 channels. The top two picks for me in the tx/rx market are Spektrum DX7s, DX8, and Futaba T8FG and T14SG. Those have best combination of radio tech, ergonomics, and widespread support. A casual user will be good with a Walkera DEVO 10 or FRSky TH9X remote. Personally, I think Walkera DEVO 10 is the best bang for buck.

Which futaba receiver are you using in yours? I believe you have a smaller unit than usual.

I'm tempted to finally take the leap. I am trying to figure out if I can afford everything I need. The transmitter I have now has five channels (I think - I'm not at home to check). Is that enough for a beginner? If yes, what receiver should I order? And if not, which tx/rx set is best for a beginner? Should I get an autopilot/GPS/telemetry unit now, or should that wait until I've mastered hands on flight? Thanks for any advice!

    • Christopher Vo

5 channels is enough to begin. You need at least an autopilot to start, the quadcopter is nearly impossible to fly without an autopilot unit.

    Where?

The final location for the group build is not announced yet, it will probably be in early november (perhaps nov 2) at Nova Labs or George Mason University.

I've made my selections but the "add to cart" button doesn't seem to do anything. Is the site not active for purchases yet?

    Thanks - Dennis

Which browser are you using? Do you have cookies and javascript enabled? It works for me in Chrome and Firefox.

I had to create an account for the 'add to cart' to work.

Not sure what to select from the store - can you make a sort of general list of what we should buy? Or do we wait to select the components?

This is the first one i am going to build so i am going to get all the parts here. I was just wondering when is the next group build planned?

    October 1

    • Timothy Reuter

I think Christopher has the next one planned for November 4, but we are still finalizing the details.
