March Build Workshop / Build Party

This event is for:

• Newbies who would like to learn how to build their own drone!

You can find a curated list of parts to buy here: (http://wiki.dcdrone.org/KitPartsList) We are always updating this list!

Some limited amount of extra parts may be available for purchase from other members. Contact Christopher Vo ([masked]) if you're completely lost and need advice on what to get, or post in the message board.  We are no longer hosting "group buys", but we can help you.

If you want to have the stuff in time for the build party, keep in mind shipping takes a while, see notes about shipping times from various vendors at the bottom of the wiki page above. In general, it takes about 2-3 weeks to get everything.

• Current users who would like technical support or to connect with other users

• Experts who would like to volunteer and help others and network.

We will provide:

• Some extra parts for sale, such as battery connectors, wires, heat shrink, etc.

• Some tools for everyone to use, such as soldering irons, crimping tools, etc.

• Fellow members with advice and expertise to guide you through your build

You should bring:

• (optional) More snacks and drinks to share. You don't have to, but the event lasts all day, so you might get hungry or thirsty. You could also contribute cash for the snack fund.

• Your own tools, if you have them

• Your drone parts! I recommend bringing a box such as an inexpensive Sterlite or Rubbermaid container to stay organized.

I appreciate the courtesy, enlightening conversations and equipment build "show n' tell." Suffice it to say that pioneers in promising industries, like drone technology, reap the rewards from taking the time and risk associated with being such. Look forward to seeing everyone again.

Thanks to Chris and all those that shared their knowledge today. I look forward to flying with the group soon.

    Cheers!

I've got a rebuilt skywalker fixed wing, with a used frame, but all new electronics. It's already been tested and held it's own in 25mph winds, but with a different radio than mine. Will anyone be there and available to help me set up my Futaba Radio with it? I've got the binding done, and can probably figure the channels out with the documentation, but I feel like I could use some clarification to understand the process better.

I also need a battery alarm for my hexacopter and some kind of inexpensive landing gear if anyone has to sell.

    • Nadine T.

Yes I'll bring it all, but probably not get there until about 2pm. Thanks Chris.

It looks like I figure it out, so am going to miss the build and go test it. Thanks for offering to help.

A reminder: For all those attending the event, the fee is $20 payable to Nova Labs. You can place your fees in the safe at the front reception area of Nova Labs. Please clip a note to your donation which states the date, and that the donation is for the DC Drone User Group Build Workshop Event. Also let me know that you paid so I can mark you as "paid".

I'm in the market for an FPV, too. Can anyone bring their systems to do a show-and-tell? I'll have my 3D Robotics Quad and Octo at the build.

    • Christopher V.

I have a 2.4G FPV Tx/Rx brand new which I got due to a fluke in an order from China. I can let go of it for $40. Technically you should be able to operate it alongside a 2.4G control radio without a problem (there will be interference, but a modern radio e.g. Spektrum DSMX or Futaba FASST or FrSky ACCST should be able to work around it)

I am looking for my last part for my drone:
    5.6mm x 14mm M3 Nylon Threaded Spacer (10pc)
HobbyKing is taking too long to send this part. Does anyone have this part they could sell me? Or suggestions?

Chris, any recommendations on gimbals? I've read some of the blogs on the site and the Zenmuse H3 2D looks like a good option. Any others I should consider?

    March 18, 2014

    • Christopher V.

Zenmuse is an excellent gimbal, but the price is pretty high in my opinion. Why pay more for a gimbal than you did for the camera? An alternative is an RCTimer IMP gimbal. The 3-axis version is $270. I have one, it is very nice. The 2-axis version is $114 (make sure to get the package deal which includes the gimbal controller).

Wondering if anybody showing up to this has a USB-UBEC tool. Need to flash my telemetry module (air module) and dont think I will be able to order one in time for the group build even tho they are cheap.

The build party has now been scheduled for Sunday March 23, not Saturday March 22! A location has been selected - Nova Labs!

My Build might be a little different than most. I have a completed Phantom 2 Vision, but I want to solder wiring to main board power supply, and mount a switch inside the shell, for exterior LED lights for easier night orientation identity. If anyone is an experienced solderer I'd be so grateful for some help in pulling this together!
    Thanks!

P.S. I'll probably be flying my Vision on Saturday at South County Middle School (plenty of level open sky!) if you would be interested in joining me. Let me know.

      March 10, 2014

    • Bob In M.

Thanks so much Tom! I'll definitely be there for the workshop, and will let you know if I can make it this coming Saturday.

Any experts hanging at Nova Labs or elsewhere this weekend? I got about 80% done last build party and suddenly I'm moving to San Francisco and I'd love to get it done under expert supervision!

    March 7, 2014

  • Wardell B.

Unfortunately, I will be out of town that weekend. Hopefully, there will be a follow-up afterwards and I'll be able to catch that.
