Drone Sports Coverage opportunity (Polo)

Some of you have flown at MadCap farm before. I'm preparing for the upcoming Virginia Polo season and looking for a few pilots to come out and fly with me as I test a proof of concept to film Polo sports events. I'd like to schedule a kickoff session to work out the details and get up in the air to begin testing flight patterns and strategies for best capturing footage of a great game that spans nine football fields. Polo is fun to watch from the sidelines but traditionally a little difficult to follow. I want to combine aerial coverage with multicam coverage (helmet-cams, and stationary cams at each goal). It's a bit of a technical challenge because while flying, we don't want to adversely effect the game by spooking the horses. Luckily, my string of polo ponies have a year under their belt now of me flying the UAS around them. Time to step it up a notch and open up our venue to more pilots and see what we can do. Please sign up if interested and I will set a date once we have enough people. (*This is a non-commercial research and development fly-in event within another sports event)

Here's an example of what has been done so far: http://player.vimeo.com/video/87035856?autoplay=1

Hey guys, I'm from Southampton N.Y. I've played polo at Southampton for a few years. I have been in the aerial photography business with airplanes for years and Drones are definitely the future. I have been flying drones for a few months and have some nice equipment set up. I would love to see how you guys handle video of polo. How do the horses and players handle you flying around. How about safetly? love to see some more videos

I'm bummed that I missed this opportunity. Then again around March my quad was still being build from scratch.
Has there been any followup or discussions? I'm interested what was involved permission-wise for getting this type of coverage.

Hi guys. Still resting from yesterdays drive. Nice meeting you guys and hopefully I'll be able to join you again in the future. Also, there was a segment on drones on '60 minutes' tonight. Haven't seen it yet but I understand Morley won't be joining any users groups any time soon. Here it is if you are interested: http://www.cbsnews.com/news/drones-over-america-60-minutes/

I want to thank everyone form joining our little practice game today and being part of this R&D effort to develop techniques for aerial equine sports coverage ! Please send me an email at [masked] to receive access to the FTP server where we will all upload and share our videos. Looking forward to seeing all your good work !

Nate. I'll be there with my step daughter. Is it ok to bring my IRIS to fly or should I just come along to learn and help where needed?

    March 14, 2014

    • Nate

Bring it. High altitude coverage will be wide open. Will be cool to look down and see all the activity in the sky below.

  • Larry B.

Nate, is it okay to just come watch what you are doing. Eager to learn and buy my first quad. You can put me to work. Would like to video a soccer game

I flew the Phantom just now at MadCap Farm and despite the 25 MPH winds it was a smooth and fun flight. It was even loaded down with my two external battery modification config. Tomorrow will be warmer and quieter, perfect conditions for our kickoff round of test flights for Polo. we have a ground station at 50 feet elevation overlooking the polo field which will help greatly with flying and staying above the hard deck. Parking will be up on the observation hill to the right as you enter the driveway. Flight procedures roles and responsibilities will be provided at the pre-flight brief. We will have one flight rehearsal and then 4 chukkers in which people ill have opportunities to fly the assigned camera positions. A graphic will be available to make it clear where these camera view points will be. We will need one person to volunteer to be the ground station chief and help coordinate with radio comms to the polo pro and equine advisor. Looking forward to seeing everyone ! Cheers !

Question. When I was involved in Electric aircraft pylon racing we developed a setup using a gear box which extended the flight time & power. Does any one know if this has been tried with a drone.

Interesting but would it apply? First, I know nothing about this so I'm pretty much talking out my but. But I did a google search and found this: http://www.rcgroups.c...

Based on decisions from today's pre-planning meeting, we will fly on 15 March at MadCap Farm. If weather and footing permits we will involve the polo ponies. Arrival and setup at 10:00, pre-flight activity until game start time at 12:00.

No worries Rich. Hope to see ya soon ! One slight change: Polo will start at 11:00 versus the original 12:00 time. Setup remains 10:00AM

Looking forward to establishing the kickoff date once the snow melts and we have safe footing for the horses. A few more weeks maybe...

In the mean time, here's a link to my Polo-Tec company that has been working the R&D on the drone polo coverage concept. These photos are frames from my videos... https://www.facebook.com/PoloTechnology

Pre-Planning meeting for this event Friday noon at Welligton's Pub at the Marriott conference center in Chantilly. Will add it as a meetup.

This all sounds very interesting, and I would love to help out if time permits. My only question is, will the horses cooperate with the noise of a multirotor? I would only want to keep in the best interests of the rider/horse safety. It seems like this isn't the first time around, so maybe I'm just being paranoid, but I'll be sure to stay updated on the dates for this!

    February 24, 2014

    • Nate

Thank you for the comment ! Yes, this is not the first time for my horses. Polo ponies are known for their 'bomb proof' conditioning. Part of the proof will be developing the appropriate flight planning strategy for best coverage while not affecting the game play. e.g. flight deck altitude, chase camera constraints etc. We have the benefit of highly experienced horseman too that will advise us on things like the horses' field of view. These are some of the topics that will be addressed at the kickoff prior to executing a live run. Have a look at the link for the video of what's been done already. Its a good example of the potential. My goal is to do it even better, with a potential for live linear multi-cam broadcast combining aerial, helmet-cam and stationary ground coverage. We already have professional commentators on board to add to the tracks for both live broadcast and post processed on demand.video.

    • Nate

Also want to address a way to get recognition for all the pilots involved in the vids so that by the time we can go commercial, we will already have a nice portfolio of proven experience with credits.

Please click attend for this event if it is of interest... We will schedule a day and time in a different DCDUG meetup entry based on availability of those interested in the initial meeting.
