DC DUG Ecological / Conservation Drones Kick Off / Planning Meeting

Let's kick off our eco/conservation sub group with a planning meeting. I propose a 2 hour meeting. I don't think we need an outside speaker, rather I suggest anyone working on or planning relevant projects gives a 5-10 minute overview and everyone attending presents interest and objectives for participating in this group. We could then devote the second hour developing clear objectives for the group and starting to outline a strategy. If you sign up to attend, please indicate your preferred area, VA, DC or MD and I will find an appropriate venue. I'm selecting Saturday an noon thinking of a working lunch, but please state a preference if you would rather Sunday and/or a different time of day.

John Waugh has hooked us up with a meeting hosted by Africa Biodiversity Collaborative Group at WWF headquarters in DC on April 2nd, where he will be facilitating and I will be presenting on Eco-Drone Best Practices, basically an overview of using drones as mapping data collection tools for socio-environmental applications. They would like to hear what this sub-group is up to, so it would be great if we had a preliminary attack plan worked out.

    I'd like to attend.
I can give a short overview of three application areas-
-Urban tree surveys (I'm a Tree Steward for our parks Dept)
-post disaster/post storm surveys (I belong to the local Community Emergency Response Team)
-traffic behavior studies and street design assessments (I teach traffic cycling and advocate for safer street designs)
You guys have a lot to offer!

Well it looks like we are going to have a great diverse set of knowledge and skills turning out. I will come up with a loose agenda so we can use the time wisely. I also wanted to let everyone know that I've been working with Brenden Duffy, who is one of the conservationdrones.org members, based in New York. He's keen to come down and touch base with our group at some point to talk about eco applications, technical stuff, etc. and maybe organize a flying event aimed at doing demos for some NGO's. I'll talk to him on Friday, so if you guys have thoughts on this, like a cool site to fly and map or something else, we could potentially plan our first event during this meeting.

In case you haven't seen this one...

I'm a neophyte, but would like the opportunity to spend 5 minutes talking about a proposed research project. May be looking for collaborators. Thanks, Andy Wilson, Gettysburg College.

Dear John, I would like to attend ABCG meeting on the 2nd. Would that be possible? I know Crawford Allan and the trafficking staff at WWF. Thanks, Margo

Thanks to Zachary Lyman and Reluminati for hosting this meeting, it'll be a great space for a working lunch. I'll bring a variety of pizzas and put a cup out for contributions.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
