Collaboratory: Mind of a Quadrotor

I'm still trying to figure out exactly what this is. The Air Force appears to be jumping into in crowdsourcing. They have set up a site called the Air Force Collaboratory with the stated intent of developing a community to solve tough science and technology problems.

The first 2 collaborations are Search and Rescue 2.0 and Mind of a Quadrotor.

These are interesting (and somewhat related) problems. I briefly looked at the quadrotor site. People are providing some ideas and suggestions via the discussion boards. But I'm not sure how much progress can be made that way. They did add some gamification (e.g. you can earn badges), but it's unclear what other incentives exist. I think an X-Prize type of challenge, like DARPA's Robotics Challenge (http://www.darpa.mil/...) would probably be a better model.

What do you guys think? Has anyone figured out autonomous flight yet? Lol
