Our Meetup was not at Visions Bistro. The winning Venue was Kelly's Irish Times. However as the host I found out that Kelly's was closed ahead of time due to the snow. SO I had posted on the WashDC Atheists.meetup miniboard that our back up venue would be next door to Kelly's at the Dubliner (4 F Street/520NCapitol Street) . Also, we posted a sign on Kelly's to come next door to the Dubliner for those that hadn't known that Kelly's was closed.

Someone did call me at the last minute and said that Meetup had changed the venue to say Visions but hadn't sent out an email telling people that. This was very distressing becauase as host I had to worry then that people perhaps a few people would end up at Visions by mistake. I tried frantically to contact Visions to find out if they were open (since many businesses were closed due to snow) At Visions all I did was get a recording about movie times and ticket prices. I called the number Visions gave to talk to a manager. No one answered. I left a message for someone to call me back and no one ever did. We assumed it was likely closed as well so decided best to stick to the back plan of Dubliners as most likely most people would end up there or at Kelly's and see the sign.
Did meetup find out that Kelly's was closed? If so why were emails not immediately sent out to all the Wash DC atheists people? or at least one to the host (me)? I honestly didn't know if it was a computer glitch that made it suddenly change to Visions or if it was put there due to Kelly's being closed.
However, seeing as everyone had gotten an email the day before telling them to go to Kelly's we figured we better go to Kelly's with the sign to come next door. 6 people did make it but 2 of them weren't even the ones that RSVP'd. I am not sure what happened to the other RSVPers if they ended up not going due to the venue confusion or all the snow, or what.
However, the 6 of us that ended up at the Dubliner had a great time and I would rate THAT venue as EXCELLENT. I HAD been to that venue. We had a great time and seeing as we were stuck in 16 inches of snow and during Code Orange in DC of all places it was good to get out and see other people of wonderful quality. We also jokingly referred to it as our Duct Tape meetup due to all the government warnings and suggestions about stocking up on duct tape and plastic sheets.

FYI, when we were still in the venue voting stage we had lots of feedback from people (a lot of them are on a local message group of mine) that Visions would be a bad place for a meetup because it is very noisey and no one would be able to hear eachother talk. Hopefullly there won't be so much confusion next month, but it seemed to turn out well and I was happy that anyone showed up considering all the confusion.
I couldn't answer #2 for Visions Cinema Bistro since we didn't go there.

By the way, when I talked to a person at Kelly's Irish Times to find out if they were open a man id'ing himself as the "General Manager" for several years was fairly rude to me about the fact that they were closed as if anyone would be open with all the snow on the ground. (Yet the Dubliner right next door to them had been open the whole weekend/week!) When I told him we had a "meetup" that was going to be there but we'd have to find a different location I told him about meetup.com and he claimed he had never heard of meetup.com and didn't know what I was talking about. (This is odd since the atheists had a meetup there back in December and surely some other groups have had meetups there.) I didn't mention anything about "atheists" so his poor attitude
wasn't derived from that. I am not sure if he REALLY was the general manager, he sounded kind of young. I did hear from many of the other people that had been to the first meetup there that they really liked Kelly's and it was a good location close to a metro stop. However everyone seemed to like the DUbliner even better. Perhaps we could suggest that as a meetup spot for future.
THanks for meetup.com site and thanks for listening.
One more thing, while I was frantically trying to figure out the venue situation yesterday afternoon I tried and tried and tried to send a question to meetup.com via the help section and it would alow me to fill out a question but wouldn't allow me to send it. Argh! Was a frustrating afternoon but the excellent meetup made up for that.

    Thanks again.

Please disregard question 2 since we didn't go there. The venue was changed from Kelly's to Visions because Kelly's was closed. Most of us didn't know this. Our hostess knew and tried to contact Visions to be certain they'd be open but they didn't answer her inquiries. So we went to the Dubliner right around the corner. Most likely more people would have come if the weather had been better. In general your system works pretty well but it broke down here because of the change in venue due to weather closings.

The site changed because the original site was closed that evening but Meetup.com did not send a special notice so only people who checked the website would have known to go to Visions. I suggest sending emails if there is a last minute change of location.
