Re: [atheists-27] Civility

Part of organizing the secular community is getting it to the point where where average people feel comfortable being involved.  If every post that appears here is vetted through a peer review process that would be appropriate for a National Academy of Atheism it will be so elitist that many if not most of us would not find it of interest.  Beyond that we would have relatively few posts.  The mission of a local group is to proved community for local members.

Obviously grotesque name calling will drive away many more people than the small number that we lose when I have to ban someone.  Note that the "c" word in this case is not only insulting to all of our women.  It is insulting to the 95% plus of our men who realize that the organizing principals of our society must include women on a more equal basis.

There are forums where grotesque language is routinely permitted.  There are implicit agreements about the nature of the in-group and the designated out-group that can be insulted.  There is almost no intelligent thought shared in such groups.  That is not what we want here.  If we need to understand that then we need discuss how and why the evidence demands this understanding.

Don,
I enjoy this discussion group soley for the contributions from sophisticated intelligent atheists. Seemingly things have devolved into long tedious threads of explaining basic civility to children.  Can we have some stricter parameters for membership here?

There is no evidence bridging the natural world with the supernatural.  This is it folks.

Where shall we draw the line then, Woody? Between human expressions and insults? How would we feel if the African American members of our community were to be insulted with the N word? Is that merely human expression? No, of course it is not.

Let us please be as civil and compassionate as we possibly can.

Don,

you will kill your forum for discussion if you started censure human being expression by labeling incivility or civility and you do not let person to defend reason for such expression.  Let people take responsibility for their words not you. Are you able to tolerate other points of view and variety of human expressions or not?

Obviously I have been forced to respond to the recent incivility.  I will not guarantee that the person involved will not return to our on-line community.  In fact I made it clear that I will consider inviting the person back if that could make sense based on contrition and understanding from that person.

We are not a social work group.  However, if we can succeed in moving people toward social values that work for them and the rest of society it is worthwhile spending some time in responding with our best wisdom and compassion.
