She may be too stupid to recognize how self-servingly selective her application of biblical instructions are and she is maybe accepting what her local church cleric says too uncritically. There are plenty of people worse than that who are not in jail. She is in jail mostly because, unlike the many other similarly mistaken people, she is employed as a court clerk.

But if she has not been given an opportunity to find other employment then we cannot say that jailing her was the only way to uphold anti-discrimination law. Therefore placing her in jail is premature and sub-optimal.

However if she is convinced her actions will be rewarded in the hereafter, I am delighted to see her "persecuted" in the here and now so she can take those brownie points to St. Peter for more virgins or something.

It is completely wrong to say compassion has no place in the law. Compassion is highly relevant to law, good law exhibits compassion. Law is not military combat. Compassion in laws makes better, stronger, laws. Law is rooted in justice which requires compassion.

>> What the hell is this: "But since she believes a god will reward her for being a faithful servant of the cult, no doubt he will amply reward in paradise her for her troubles here on earth. Problem solved!"? Try making that argument before a judge and see how far that gets you. A person's belief about gods or paradise or anything of that sort are irrelevant. What is relevant is protecting civic equality before the law and striking a balance when conflicting claims have merit.
