RE: [atheists-27] New Meetup: Meet the Organizer

Don,

I don't think the Atheists Meetup group should be a revolutionary community
devoted to pointing out the evils of religion and taking positions on
political issues. Rather I think it should be a social group among Atheists
as it has been for the last year, at least. I don't think I can agree with
you on ethical good, or on the impact of religion on society, and I hope the
group will not get involved in the types of issues you discuss in your
letter.

Tom, it is so good to hear from you. If you can make it I would like you to
come to our next meetup and talk about your being part of our leadership
team. If it is just me leading our community I will not create the sense of
community I want here. I want a team around me who understands the critical
importance of secular community in a religion saturated world. If it is
done right, creating that sense of community is revolutionary and should be
a delight for the members of the team leading it as well as our wider
community. Let me say a little bit more about what that means.

We are at a sweet spot in the evolution of culture. It is a religion
saturated world but one where secular community is now highly visible and
exciting to many. The ultimate importance of this process rests in the fact
that religion in too many cases sanctifies evil and demonizes good. The net
result is an absurd host of negative outcomes. Children are left to rot in
a dismal foster care system when loving gay families would like to adopt
them. Relatively innocuous use of recreational drugs results in absurd
prison sentences. An insanely inadequate social safety net results in homes
being lost and families being destroyed. The religious right culture wants
to subjugate women in numerous ways. They want to steal their bodies and
force them to give birth to children even if the resources for that are
appallingly inadequate and they have the gall to call this being ?pro-life.?
It would be more appropriate to call them the coerced parenthood
 crowd.

We have a very bright community here. In order to create a revolutionary
force for good all we need to do is create a community of liberated minds.
Once the chains of ignorance are removed it becomes possible to judge
ethical outcomes by their empirical consequences. We don't need to say
anything about how to do that. A conception of the ethical good
automatically evolves from interacting with similarly liberated people.

I have become much more militant over time. Even rather innocuous forms of
religion such as ethical culture now have effects that are obvious evils to
me. This includes the demonizing of atheists as ?just another form of
fundamentalism.? Three years ago I was a member of the Washington Ethical
Society and this was one of the many things that made me leave them

Tom, I am certain that we can have you as a member of our leadership team in
a way that will not be a burden to you. Done right it is a joy. With a
small investment of time and energy you have the pleasure of nurturing a
revolutionary conception of the good for the entirety of the wider culture.

Obviously, if others find this conception of leadership appealing I hope you
find the time to come to a future meetup and talk with me.

Revolutionary and warm regards to all,

Don
