Afrofuturism Films & Discussion

Screening of Pumzi, a Kenyan science-fiction piece by Wanuri Kahiu, and two films about Drexciya: the Britist Hydra Decapita and Simon Rittmeier’s film Drexciya, about European refugees to Africa.
Panelists will include artist Daniel Kojo Schrade, performing artist Shola Cole, and Naima J. Keith, Curator of the show The Shadows took Shape at The Studio Museum in Harlem.
Moderated by Karen E. Milbourne, Curator, National Museum of African Art, Smithsonian Institution.
The films are presented in conjunction with the exhibition "Afrofuturism: Artists on Three Continents Explore 'Black to the Future'", on display until Feb. 28. Three artists - from Germany, Ghana and the United States - use the lens of fiction to address issues of alienation and otherness. They travel through space and time to explore identity and reexamine the past.
Gallery hours: M-Th 9-5; F 9-3

Agreed, I really liked the panel. If I make it up to NYC in the next few weeks I hope to check out the Afrofuturism exhibit at the Studio Museum in Harlem.

Hey everyone, looks like the weather has let up so I'll still be there tonight. Who else is still going?

    Hi All -
I should have mentioned this sooner. The largest Black film festival in the USA runs in Los Angeles from February 6 through the 17th. If you're in LA during the run, definitely check it out - www.paff.org It's actually worth a trip because of the variety of filmmakers and film lovers who attend and engage in discussions. PAFF always includes films both from the USA and throughout the Diaspora and covers virtually every genre.
