Miles of Smiles, Years of Struggle (2001, 120 min), by Ousmane Sembene. Kiné (pronounced KEE-neh) is a single mother with two children, two ex-husbands and an assortment of friends. She is the manager of a sparkling new gas station in Dakar, but her success has been hard-earned in a male dominated society.
In FAAT KINÉ, Ousmane Sembene, the father of African cinema, pays tribute to the "everyday heroism of African women," and provides a critical look at modern, post-colonial Senegal and the place of women in that society. (French and Wolof with English subtitles).
Our screening will be followed by a discussion hosted by Mwiza Munthali, the Public Outreach Director of TransAfrica.
