The Two Faces of War (As Duas Faces da Guerra) (2007, 105 min), by Diana Andringa and Flora Gomes – shot in Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde and Portugal, the film examines the wars of independence in Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde through the recollections of veterans and leaders on both sides of the conflict.
But, more than merely a retelling of battles, the film looks at how visionary leaders like Amilcar Cabral helped some Portuguese soldiers develop solidarity towards Guinea-Bissau’s fight - helping them understand the link between the anticolonial struggle in Africa and the antifacist struggle in Portugal. Thus the seeds of revolution in Portugal were sown in Africa and the result was greater freedom for the peoples of both countries - independence for Guinea-Bissau and the overthrow of the dictatorship in Portugal. (In Portuguese with English subtitles).
After our screening we’ll have an audience discussion with Mwiza Munthali; host of the radio show "Africa Now," and with Iane Campos-Siddique; a university lecturer in Portuguese.
