CHORO FESTIVAL AT MILLENNIUM STAGE, KENNEDY CENTER - SEPTEMBER 3

The Brazilian Embassy and the Kennedy Center are proud to present the Choro Festival, celebrating this truly Brazilian music genre of more than one century of existence. Four Brazilian groups will perform on September 2, 3, 9 and 10 always at 6pm on the Millennium Stage, Kennedy Center. No tickets required!

Choro, popularly called chorinho, is a Brazilian popular and instrumental music genre that has more than 130 years of existence. Its historical backgound is the city of Rio de Janeiro, with the arrival of the portuguese Royal Family in Brazil, in 1808. Brazilian musicians were more exposed to European musical styles, in a musical environment that was already strongly influenced by African rhythms.
Choro was one of the first truly homegrown Brazilian musical styles and offered a foretaste of the musical explosion that would take place in the country. It was extremely popular in Brazil during the early days of radio, in the 1920s, but by the ?60s it had largely disappeared; supplanted by the samba and bossa nova. In the late '70s there was a concerted effort to revive the genre, which was largely successful.

Spearheaded by a younger generation of musicians, Choro is once again a thriving sound in Brazil attracting new fans and adherents every day. ?N? Em Pingo D??gua?, founded in 1978, is the group that is generally credited for first inspiring the new generation to embrace Choro. Rog?rio Souza, who will play on the Millenium Stage on September 2nd, is a member of the group, which was a pioneer in developing the style of music that is known today as ?choro novo? ? innovative interpretations of traditional Brazilian instrumental music while remaining true to the roots of the music.
