The DC Classical Chamber Music Players' Meetup group is a collection of classical musicians interested in playing chamber music for fun. While good music is the goal, the emphasis here is on fun and enjoyment! As of 11/15/14, we have 155 members, covering 17 different instruments, at varying skill levels. All musicians of all instruments, at all skill levels except beginner, are welcome to join. There's no obligation to play at any given gathering, but you might quickly find yourself tempted to join in. Many who were reticent to attend, or thought they might just "sit and listen" found themselves playing at their first meeting. Nerves and feeling intimidated can be left at the doorstep. We're a collegial, congenial, non-competitive group; criticism and attitude are not welcome; everyone's best effort is gratefully accepted by all.
In addition to small ensemble play, we sponsor the DC Chamber Orchestra, which holds two concerts per year and has semi-monthly rehearsals September through May at a church conveniently located near public transportation, in downtown NW DC. All are welcome here too.
IMPORTANT NOTE TO CLARINETISTS, FLUTISTS AND PIANISTS
We have a sizable number of flutists and clarinetists in the group. They are very active participants. Spots for those instruments in the orchestra (concerts) are generally already taken. And spots for those instruments in small ensemble gatherings fill up very quickly. Your best opportunity for play is either to host events, or to RSVP to available openings the moment they are announced. Please consider this before requesting membership. If you can't host, the organizer cannot make any guarantees about the frequency of your opportunities to participate.
Similarly, pianists... Opportunities to play with the orchestra are rare indeed (nothing on the horizon until at least the 2015-16 season). We do not have sponsored practice/rehearsal space except for the orchestra. Most events at which pianos are available are hosted by pianists who intend to play the piano for the entirety of the event. Only a few times a year are there small ensemble events at which a shared piano spot may be availble. Again, if you can't host, the organizer cannot make any guarantees about the frequency of your opportunities to participate. Please consider this before requesting membership.
