Socialist Salon Monthly Discussion Forum

Socialist Salon is DSA's monthly forum to discuss the politics, economics, theory, and practice of democratic socialism.

Come to Socialist Salon and share your insights!

Socialist Salon Monthly Discussion Forum is generally held on the Third Thursday of the month.

The topic for this month will be student loan debt.

Student loan debt in the United States now exceeds $1 trillion. Higher education is increasingly treated as an individual commodity, rather than a public good or an investment in our collective future.

We will be discussing what this means for students and for society as a whole and what we can do to make student loan repayment simple and fair.

This year is the 100th anniversary of Rosa Luxemburg's "The Accumulation of Capital". I hope there would be a special salon for that. I am preparing a paper for a conference myself.

I guess you missed the well-timed and well-conceived revolutions, like our own.

Does anybody else have anything to say that's closer to the topic of this Socialist Salon -- the crisis in unpaid student debts and the DSA / Young Democratic Socialist campaign for debt relief and/or debt forgiveness?

Bahram - Do you have some suburban location in mind? We have had events in Maryland, although not many, and we've had some activist events in Northern Virginia, although not many.

I can't speak for everyone else who attends the Salons; others may feel differently. but I think an occasional change of location would be OK, so long as the suburban location you choose is fairly easily accessible by public transit as well as by car.

Are you in Maryland or Northern Virginia?

Jessie - you did make it to this Salon on student debt, didn't you? I hope you found the location more convenient than expected. The Human Dynasty is just a few blocks from the Capitol South metro stop on the orange line, though it's signicantly further along the line than Metro Center.

Andy, yes, I made it just fine. Anything along the orange line is pretty easy for me, and it doesn't go too late for me to get home at a reasonable time. Also, I am new to the area and I still like walking around near the Capitol and the Library of Congress!

Can the meetings be in the suburbs too?

Is there anybody else who has an opinion / preference on this? Especiailly (though not exclusively) someone we haven't heard from yet?

Those are some good points, Andy (and Woody, as well). I certainly wouldn't oppose such a meeting structure if there was enough support and interest, especially if it meant INCREASING our numbers. I think I also understood "suburbs" as the suburbs of the metro region, rather than the suburbs within DC proper.

I'm in favor (always have been) of having some meetings outside the District, though DC is so central to our local's reach that it is the logical place for most of them. A member meeting in Maryland, or in Virginia, should have a discussion topic that might attract passive members in the meeting's immediate area... organizing and coalition opportunities and issue aspects relating to the next Maryland legislative session, as an example. We should take advantage of the location for substantive reasons. As always, the hardest work is finding a meeting venue we can afford -- Maryland county libraries are not as welcoming to local political groups as D.C.'s are...

This was another good Salon -- less theoretical than some of our previous ones, and more focused on possible angles for activists to take on the student debt iissue. I thought we went off on some side paths as we examined different dimensions of the crisis in student loan debt, rather than strictly staying on national DSA's somewhat minimalist campaign goals. But I have the sense that this can enrich Metro DC DSA's approach to the issue going forward. It also facilitated everyone being able to speak to the issue, or at least everyone who wanted to. Monica, you organized and led this Salon - what do you think?

Because we had a very good exchange of ideas, I feel that I begin to know everybody's political and humane background much better than before. Better than the introductions at the beginning of the meeting. LOL

Hey all, I’ve broken them up into categories so that people can pick and choose which aspects of the problem interest them most, allowing for a more varied and expansive discussion of student debt.

Plz don't feel like ya have to read them all! Also, thanks to John for finding a number of these articles!

Monica (who provided the reading list) is basically organizing this Salon. I think she's probably be attending along with the rest of us, though she isn't listed as having RSVP'd yet.

I prefer events in the suburbs where we can actually park a car.
