Socialist Salon Monthly Discussion Forum

Socialist Salon is DSA's monthly forum to discuss the politics, economics, theory, and practice of democratic socialism. Come to Socialist Salon and share your insights! Socialist Salon Monthly Discussion Forum is generally held on the Third Thursday of the month.

This month's Salon continues the discussion we began in the last one, about what's happening to the wages & employment rates of American workers in the context of a long-term economic stagnation that's affecting capitalist economic performance from the US to the European Union and even China.  This month 's discussion leader will be Dr. Dave Richardson, a retired Department of Labor economist who's a longtime DSA member and union activist. Our reading is from three recent articles in the socialist magazine Monthly Review:

Jessie - is Le Pain Quotidien in Bethesday near a Metro stop? Mary & Rosalie -- would this location work for each of you? Or if not, is there some other location that would be better?

Sorry, I was thinking of La Madeleine, near the Bethesda Metro Station. Too many Meetups at French chains....

As long as it has a parking lot, it works for me!

Another thing I notice about Mary and Rosalie's situations: since you're each disabled, and we don't know exactly where you live, it's not going to be so easy for others to come up with a good meeting place you each can get to.

Why don't you each suggest someplace that's close to where you live, and that will provide a meeting place that will hold 10-20 people, and that's quiet enough so that everyone in the Salon can hear everyone else talk? We hit on Hunan Dyasty after trying several other places that turned out to be too noisy for good discussions. And we chose it partly because it does have good Metro access - an essential for those of us who don't have cars. Can you find a place with Hunan's advantages, that you each can get to?

Just want you to know that I am not seeking to split up any groups, only to figure out how to allow others to regularly participate who cannot make it into the city. I think it would be great if there could be monthly MoCo and NoVa meetings!

Mary, no worries, I see your point. I think it would be absolutely fantastic if there were more people who wanted to participate in DSA in MD and NoVA. Is there a way to contact the whole Meetup list to take a survey about that? The issue is whether there is a critical mass in each of these areas to sustain groups. If someone wants to go ahead and start a new event in a new location, I would be all for that. I would also try to attend this one if it rotated locations.

I'm sorry, I forgot that Rosalie is out in Howard County. You say that Bethesda wouldn't be good for you, which leaves the rest of us with a dilemma. I don't know how to tackle the dilemma without leaving out NoVa members like Jessie. Do you know of other DSAers or DSA wannabes in Howard County? and do you know of a good place to meet out there? I don't know if we can meet your needs, but I'm just asking for discussion purposes. It would be good if we could find a "win-win" solution here.

That's why I posited that there be separate meetings (not for the salon, per se), but for smaller groups who would prefer to meet in other locations.

For this month's Salon, it's too late to change the location; instead, let's have it where we usually do. For future Salons, I think we should have SOME in either northern Viriginia or southern MD, but not most of them. The Human Dynasty location near the Metro South station is still much more centrally located & convenient for people across our geographic footprint.

Silver Spring sounds good, too. I just need to be able to park close to where we are actually meeting b/c I am disabled and can only walk short distances.

I am disabled too and I have a handicap parking sticker. I would not want to have to take the metro anywhere

I couldn't come regularly if it were any farther from where I live (West Falls Church), but I could make it to Bethesda for an occasional meeting.

I live in Howard County and it is just so hard for me to get to DC or even bethesda. I was thinking of creating my own group in Howard County but it just seems like such a lot of work. I am in so many groups already. I just wish there was one here.

Bethesda or Silver Spring works better for me too. Parking is much better in Silver Spring but metro is closer in Bethesda and Bethesda is closer to where Mary (below) can make it. Either way, count me in!

    March 15, 2014

  • Rosalie C.

If you come up closer to me I could make it. I just cannot travel that far. Silver spring would be better, but I might be able to get to bethesda.

We could. Bethesda in particular sounds like a good location. We have had meetings in Silver Spring before.
