April Socialist Salon Topic Nominations Now Open!

From: Jeff
Sent on: Thursday, March 18, 2010 10:16 PM
Greetings to all, Andy and I really enjoyed tonight's lively discussion on how to talk about democratic socialism. As I explained to those who attended, we want everyone's input about future discussion topics rather than just imposing our own pet topics on you. Each month before we meet, we will nominate and vote for the following month's topic here on the DC-DSA Meetup website; thus we'll start nominating and voting for May's topic this month, and I'll open that forum in a couple days. Typically, the nomination period will last two weeks followed by a two week voting period, but this month we also have to vote for April's topic, and will follow an accelerated schedule for that.

April Socialist Salon Discussion Topic
Nomination Period: Thursday March 18 ? Sunday March 28
Voting Period: Monday March 29 ? Tuesday April 6th
Winning topic is discussed on Thursday, April 15

That will give us time to advertise the Meetup and the winning topic. I will try to send out e-mails to remind everyone of important dates.

Anyone can nominate a topic, but please keep it relevant to DSA's mission. Also, nominations should consist of one single main question stated briefly in a sentence, with any supporting ideas in a brief paragraph of 2-4 additional sentences. Brevity is important here so that topics can be advertised on Meetup, Facebook, and eventually the DC-DSA website. The group co-organizers reserve the right to edit topics for length and content, although we will try to be as faithful to your original proposals as possible. Nominated topics that could be construed as discriminatory will be removed from consideration.

A word on voting: we'll use a multiple-vote, plurality-wins system. You can vote for as many of the nominated topics as you like (even for all of them!), but you can only vote for each topic once. The topic that gets the most votes wins (even if it doesn't have a majority). I've found this system to work well in other groups so I thought we'd try it here.

As group leader, Andy and I will always nominate a topic. We will do so for April in the next day or two, but in the meantime feel free to post your own nominations for April to this message board. We will open up nominations for May in a few days.

Respectfully yours,

Jeff Zavadil, Cafe Inquiry Group Leader, CFI-DC
