It's time for the Post Hunt, the annual scavenger hunt held by the Washington Post! If you've never participated in the Hunt, you're missing out on great fun. We've had multiple teams of GenXers in the Hunt each year since it started in DC; two years ago, one of our teams placed third!

Here's a blurb from the Post website:

"People come from across the country — in teams or individually, in costume or not — to compete for glory, fame and $2,000. Mostly the glory. The game, sponsored by WP Magazine, work likes this: In a day of hilarity and head-scratching, you solve a series of amazing puzzles that will either drive you insane or drive you to a Mensa meeting. The Post Hunt must be on your bucket list."

There's a practice puzzle on the same page:

And the key Twitter accounts:

@posthunt is the official Washington Post Hunt account

@GenXPostHunt is the account for the GenX SIG

Both of these accounts are used solely for the Post Hunt.

Meet starting at 11 a.m. at Corner Bakery National Press, 529 14th St. NW. Bring a copy of the most current Washington Post Sunday magazine; it will contain key parts of the clues to the puzzles. We'll have a table for the group, usually in the rear by the rest rooms. This is a good time to meet your fellow GenXers and get with a team if you so desire.

Once the Hunt is over and the winner(s) have been announced, we'll go to dinner at:

Capitol City Brewing Company - Downtown
1100 New York Avenue NW

Our reservation is for 5:30 pm, but if we show up early, it should be fine. The worst thing that will happen is that we'll enjoy a drink at the bar.

See you at the Hunt!

I wondered if they had figured out the endgame in advance...

A tremendous amount of fun... the mild sunburn I got on my neck and arms was worth it! Woot! Can't wait for next year!

Excellent, though yet again the podium eluded our teams.

Must one register in advance somewhere? And what kinds of costumes do people wear?

No need to register. Just show up.

I would frown upon costumes -- especially because D.C. in early June is hot and sticky -- however, I have seen teams playing in the Tropic Hunt (Miami) wearing the same T-shirt or hat (to indicate a team).

My first year playing, on South Beach in 1993 (before mobile telephones), my team all had walkie-talkies and code names. That year I saw one team dressed in camouflage, another team with gold T-shirts, etc.

Jessica - I do believe you should roll up as Poison Ivy!

I'm surprised by the level of growth I've seen since becoming an organizer, it's given me more confidence in my abilities.
