Internet of Things: Networking and Discussion

  • April 10, 2013 · 7:00 PM

Internet of Thing (IoT), Internet of Everything (IoE), Machine-to-machine (M2M), or just Web 3.0: This is the next "wave" of the Internet that, according to Cisco, could be a $14.4 Trillion market. What makes the IoT different from Web 1.0 and 2.0? A vast and diverse collection of hardware, in the form of networked sensors and actuators, connected to an Internet far more granular than we are used to today.

This meetup is for anyone interested in IoT or even learning about it. The format will depend on the interests of people signing up.

Location: Clyde's of Chevy Chase, right off the Friendship Heights metro stop (red line). We'll meet downstairs in the Race Bar. There is a pay lot adjacent for those who want to drive.

It was a thought provoking discussion. Lots of good ideas for future applications both entrepreneurial and hobbyist. Looking forward to future exchanges.

I'm trying to think of a way to motivate some more exchanges. Would a regular event to present ideas and get feedback be helpful? We could then think about a friendly competition to encourage people to pursue their ideas and show case them. What does everyone think?

I like that idea actually. Some HW Startup Meetups have "pitch" sessions where people present their company/project over say 5 minutes and field questions. I was thinking more of a "business model clinic" type of discussion where each team could 1) present their idea in a few minutes (or a few slide), and then 2) stick up a "business model canvas" that encapsulates their business on one sheet of paper- here's a great site that shows what I mean- it's free for teams of <= 2 people: http://leancanvas.com... Then everyone in the audience can critique their project/plan over say 10-15 minutes.

I had a lot of fun. Everyone had a lot of great insights and comments! I'd like to have our next session be a geek out session. I liked Baabi's idea of trying to centralize meetings at a local university ... this could be a good collaboration between the grey haired set and the young and vibrant. This will also get us into closer proximity to the University start-up incubation opportunities. We should make it a regular theme to highlight things we're all working on.

Thank You for coming Daniel- it was great to meet you and Frank and hear about your project. I know some people at U.Md. that might be able to facilitate that. So I'll be scheduling more meetups soon. BTW I have DCHW set up so that any member can set up a meetup so no need to wait for me!

    • Daniel T.

That makes sense. I think you should still prod us along until it can reach critical mass though. Once I have something interesting to show with our project I'll organize a show and tell. If you and Baabi have hooks into UMCP, I can help you coordinate a meeting there.

Just go downstairs, past the beautiful red Jag, and you'll see me at the bar with a beer.

Looking forward to it! Finally a group that is interested in hardware!

...And if you then drive by a bunch of high-end retail stores (Cartier, Louis Vuitton, Tiffany, two beautiful Maserati's parked next to each other, etc.) then you can try again turning right onto Montgomery Ave. It shows up pretty clear on Google Maps w/ hybrid satellite view.

      oops Maseratis not Maserati's

This location is off my map at the moment. I look forward to the next event!

My schedule is tight and I set aside this evening to make it to this event, so I'd vote for keeping it on for today. How about meeting at some easy to get to bar .... Rock Bottom Arlington, Hops in Potomac Yard or somebody throw out a spot that they consider easy to get to (my knowledge of spots in the DC metro area is waning).

I saw you are based in Elkridge MD- I figure Clyde's should be convenient for you as well. I look forward to meeting you.

    • Daniel T.

I appreciate the consideration. Unfortunately I work in deep dark southern DC so no where is particularly convenient. See ya tonight!

Do we have a location yet?

    1 · April 9, 2013

    • Geoffrey L. B.

Yes we do! Clyde's of Chevy Chase. Sorry about the delay!

      April 10, 2013

  • Geoffrey L. B.

Everyone- I'm really sorry about leaving the location to the last minute- I was a preoccupied with family matters this past week.

I'm still up for a meetup this evening if everyone else is. We just need a location... Beer-and-talk is fine by me. Or we could delay it to another day (I'll have my act together that time!!!) I'll decide by noon based on answers over the next couple hours.

OK I decided on Clyde's of Chevy Chase, downstairs in the Race Bar. See you all tonight!!

    • Geoffrey L. B.

Jose- Don't worry- we will be having more meetups focused on IoT- I think it is a fascinating and potentially huge topic.

      April 10, 2013

  • Geoffrey L. B.

OK Folks we're on! Let's meet at Clyde's of Chevy Chase, downstairs in the "race bar". Clyde's is on the MD/DC border, across the street (north) from the Friendship Heights metro stop (red line). There is also a pay parking lot right there, as well as plenty of other parking garages, for those who want to drive in.

To help you recognize me, I'll be wearing a purple T-shirt with a funky "mecha-robot" design on front.

Good idea, but try for a location near the Beltway, as I have far to come

I don't think I can make it unless it's on Thursday.

Do you need a location? Depending on the size and scope of your presentation, I can look into offering the event space at Weber Shandwick downtown DC offices [masked]th St NW Washington, DC 20001). Some other options are: The Fridge, nClud, Canvas, etc.

It also occurs to me that we are the official Creative Mornings representatives in DC. I'm not sure if you know about this group, but it's essentially a morning presentation format, 20 min talk or demo about anything creative, followed by breakfast. Everything is sponsored and we're starting things off this Friday: http://creativemornin... If you were so inclined, you might think of getting together a presentation on your topic and share it with a larger audience of creatives in DC! What do you think? 20 mins isn't that bad, just enough time to introduce a few concepts, show examples and whet some appetites!

Can we push this to Thursday?

    March 18, 2013

    • Geoffrey L. B.

Hi Mohammed- I was originally going to schedule this for Tuesday April 9, which is "Internet of Things" day, but I had a conflict (will be out of town). Unfortunately April 11 doesn't work for me either as I have visitors from out of town. I hope you can make it, but if not, I am sure we will have another IoT themed meetup soon- this is an exciting area!
