Book Club meeting

The book club meets at the Madhatter in south Dupont.  We will be reading "The White Man's Burden: Why the West's Efforts to Aid the Rest Have Done So Much Ill and So Little Good," by William Easterly.

I will make a reservation for the group under the name Andrew, and try to get the usual Madhatter room in the back.  Just ask for the Andrew table when you get there.

Hey guys, After reading Easterly i have decided to make a career change and I was hoping to use this meet up group as means to network, since all of us all share the same interest. I narrowed my search down to four organizations ACDI/VOCA, Chemonics international and Crown agent USA . If you know anyone that works in any of this agencs could please contact me or could you keep an ear open for any business development associate jobs or Project Assistant ? perfectible in Business development, consulting venture capital. Location: Boston, or New York or DC. That would be a big help and please let know if the is anything i could do for you in return.

Here’s hoping that our neo-liberals come prepared to debunk Chang, because I have been blown away with his historic analysis of the free trade fables that I began believing after reading “In Defense of Globalization.” Chang’s analyses are devastating to the orthodoxy of the "holy trinity" and their neo-liberal ideology. For those who have not begun it, you will find it not only eminently readable but amazingly understandable. I found it hard to put down.

You will enjoy his critique of SOE’s, "State Owned Enterprises" and his fabulous ability to demonstrate its equal relevance to privatization.

      Jack,

I have the exact opposite opinion of this book. I thought Chang cherry-picked his data, argued poorly (even dishonestly) and wrote a profoundly anti-human book.

      Monday should be fun.

Are we meeting on the 1st or the 8th?

    March 26, 2013

    • Andrew

The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, April 1st. If there is demand and consensus to move it back one week, I would be OK with that though.

Hi All. One thought - if we have as big of a crowd show up tonight as expected, then it may be helpful if people try to bring cash to pay for any food/drink. Having our server split the bill 28 ways for one group so everyone can pay on their cards seems a bit burdensome on them. Anyway, just a thought, since we've had this issue in the past.

Ugh so wish I could make it - this was going to be the first one I was able to attend! Got pulled into a photoshoot for the evening. Have fun discussing without me! :(

Hi everyone. We've got 26 people that have responded that they plan to attend the meeting Tuesday. This is excellent! Could I just ask that anyone who has had a change of plans and now cannot attend please change their RSVP status? I need to confirm the reservation, and want to update the Mad Hatter on how many people to expect, so that we have enough spaces. Thanks!

I have seen a special that treated the microloan program as a real success. I think the author of White Man's Burden would sing its praises. It is a grass roots approach to capitalism.

I wish to pose a question to the group. As a citizen of a third world country, i am curious to know your personal options about the effectiveness of Micro Finance as a means of alleviating poverty.

    • Guy

Of limited effectiveness: on a micro canvass, it may indeed book some positive effect; but globally, as regards the wider economy - it is no 'game-changer'.

I cannot go on tuesday, unfortunately. =(

Sorry that the Tuesday doesn't work for you! I'm hesitant to reschedule for another day now that so many people have RSVP'ed though. Sorry!

I think I'll be able to make this one! :)

Looks like really interesting reading. Can't wait to meet people who've read it.

Because of a possible conflict, I'm scheduling next month's meeting for Tuesday instead of Monday. Please let me know if this is a problem for anyone that otherwise would attend! I don't want to be inconveniencing anyone, and can try to figure out a way to keep the original day, if this is going to be a problem.

Would there be any strong objections to holding this one meeting on Tuesday, March 5th instead of Monday?
